Sometimes, the smallest innovations can create the biggest impact—especially when they protect nature, empower communities, and strengthen livelihoods together. In India, where agriculture and biodiversity are deeply connected, improving pollination systems can unlock both ecological and economic benefits.
In this interview, Mark Titus, President – Decorative Coatings Business at Nippon Paint India, shares insights on the company’s strategic partnership with Humble Bee to transform India’s apiculture ecosystem. He explains how eco-friendly, low-VOC coatings are being used to make beehives more durable, safer, and better suited to India’s diverse climate conditions.
The conversation explores the vision behind the initiative, the innovative ‘Blobby’ hive design, and how this collaboration is helping improve bee health, boost pollination, and create sustainable income opportunities—especially for women in rural and tribal communities. It also highlights how combining technology, sustainability, and grassroots engagement can build a stronger, more resilient value chain from hive to harvest.

Q - What is the vision behind this partnership, and what key gaps in India’s apiculture ecosystem are you aiming to address through this initiative?
A. India faces a significant pollination gap, despite growing demand for honey and agri-output. Existing hives often lack durability in diverse weather conditions and standardization and longevity. Through this partnership with Humble Bee, we aim to bring innovation, durability, and sustainability into the hive infrastructure.
Q - What are the primary objectives of this initiative in terms of sustainability, biodiversity, and rural livelihood improvement?
A. This initiative goes beyond coatings - it is about enabling a more resilient ecosystem. Our key objective has been to support biodiversity, enhance sustainability through eco-friendly materials and processes, and improve rural livelihoods by increasing hive productivity and lifespan. Ultimately, we aim to create a self-sustaining value chain from hive to harvest.
Q - How do Nippon Paint’s low-VOC, eco-friendly coatings contribute to creating a safer and more durable environment for beehives?
A. Our low-VOC, eco-friendly coatings are essential in creating a bee-safe environment. High-VOC paints release harmful fumes that can disrupt bees’ sensory functions, navigation, and overall health - making it harder for colonies to thrive. By significantly reducing these emissions, our coatings ensure a non-toxic habitat while also protecting hives from weathering and moisture, thereby extending their lifespan and maintaining structural integrity. As a GreenPro-certified brand, sustainability is built into every solution we offer at Nippon Paint India.
Q - Could you explain how the ‘Blobby’ hive design was developed.
A. The ‘Blobby’ hive is a result of a thoughtful co-creation between Nippon Paint India and Humble Bee. We’ve brought together ‘Blobby,’ our brand mascot, and the bee—an integral part of Humble Bee’s identity—to create a design that represents both brands in unison. Beyond just aesthetics, the idea was to develop something that symbolises collaboration, sustainability, and innovation, while staying true to the core purpose of supporting and nurturing bee habitats.
Q - This initiative focuses on rural and tribal communities, especially women farmers. How do you see it impacting their income and livelihood stability?
A. At Nippon Paint India, empowering women to be self-reliant and creating opportunities for them has always been at the core of our philosophy. Our ‘NShakti’ initiative—focused on training women to become professional painters and enabling financial independence—is a strong testament to this commitment. We are proud to be associated with an initiative that supports women from tribal communities.
By enabling additional income streams through beekeeping and improving productivity, this ecosystem helps build greater livelihood stability. More importantly, it fosters independence and agency at the grassroots level - creating more meaningful and long-term impact.
Q - How has the collaboration between Nippon Paint India and Humble Bee helped strengthen this initiative, and what value has each partner brought to the table?
A. This collaboration is a strong synergy of complementary strengths. As Nippon Paint India, we have brought our expertise in coatings innovation, sustainability, and scale, while Humble Bee contributes with deep domain knowledge in apiculture, along with a strong community connect. Together, we are creating a solution that is technologically robust, socially impactful, and environmentally responsible.
This initiative reflects our belief that innovation must go beyond products; it must create meaningful impact for communities, ecosystems, and the future.
