When Hope Becomes Strength: Gulshan’s Journey to Overcoming Physical Challenges

csr

Physical disabilities can significantly affect an individual's emotional and mental health, frequently resulting in a lack of motivation and feelings of disheartenment. Having a physical disability means facing daily obstacles that can turn simple tasks into daunting challenges. However, support from communities and foundations often enables such individuals to overcome difficulties and engage in their routine activities with a positive and confident approach.

One such case of resilience and positive outcome is that of Gulshan. Gulshan from Sarurpur, Haryana, was struggling with the loss of his limbs - both legs and an arm, leaving him entirely dependent on his family. When he came to Sarvodaya Hospital, his physical and emotional state was fragile and was filled with pain. He faced immense physical pain and emotional trauma, feeling like a burden to his poor family. He had enrolled under a government program for a tricycle but was given no help for some unknown reasons. However, one thing that made Gulshan not give up was his determination to support his family. This sparked his transformative journey.

Proper support systems, adaptive strategies, and a nurturing environment have helped numerous people with disabilities to discover fresh and innovative methods to accomplish their objectives, restoring a feeling of purpose and drive. Motivated by Gulshan’s determination and spirit, Ms. Anshu Gupta, Founder of Sarvodaya Foundation, with the Rotary Club's support set out to help him restore mobility and dignity. Initially, other people thought giving him a cycle would be risky as he wouldn’t be able to ride it properly on the road. However, after listening to his story and recognising his confidence and zeal to work, the Sarvodaya Foundation offered him emotional counselling and provided him with a tricycle.

He began selling Devashraya’s Gausampatti products at local temples, gaining financial independence and a renewed sense of purpose. Devashraya Animal Hospital is the animal welfare initiative of the Sarvodaya Foundation, providing safe shelter to helpless and injured animals. Established by Anshu Gupta, the hospital offers facilities for better health, shelter, and meals to the animals. Gausampatti products are an extension of the hospital to create a sustainable model to support animal welfare at the hospital. The organic products are made from cow dung and other natural elements that are safe for human health and the environment. Dhoopbatti, Sambrani cups, diyas, hawan samagri, and wall clocks are some of the safe, healthy and environment-friendly products that Gulshan now sells at local temples, which help him earn money for his family. Under this initiative of the Sarvodaya Foundation, people from informal sectors are offered employment opportunities and provide their children with educational facilities.

Anshu Gupta, Founder, Sarvodaya Foundation said, “At Sarvodaya Foundation, we are committed to human welfare through healthcare and employment, animal care, and environmental conservation. We have initiated vocational training and skill development programs for women in rural areas, empowering them with the tools to earn a living and support their families. We sponsored the schooling of underprivileged children, especially in rural regions with the concept of "schools under trees". At Devashraya Animal Hospital we shelter and treat abandoned and injured animals along with integrating eco-friendly product manufacturing with animal produced products into operations. Gulshan’s example is a true testament to human zeal and enthusiasm for being independent and doing something for their family. Post gifting him a tricycle, we realised, that to make him stay independent, he needed to earn money on his own. We gave him Gausamapatti products to sell in local temples. The revenue generated helps him earn a livelihood for his family and meet his daily needs. At Sarvodaya Foundation, we endeavour to help people like him with employment, education and other resources.”

A story that truly embodies our values is that of Gulshan, who faced overwhelming physical challenges but never gave up. Despite being paralyzed in three of his four limbs, Gulshan’s determination to work and make a living has been inspiring to us all. His story reminds us of the resilience and hope we aim to foster, not just in human lives, but in the care and well-being of every animal we touch. It is this spirit of perseverance that drives our commitment to providing the best care possible for pets and their families.”

At present, Gulshan is independent and makes a steady income by selling Devashraya products to earn his living. He plays a vital role in his family's financial security and is deeply engaged in his community, acting as a source of motivation for those encountering similar obstacles. Gulshan hopes to expand his work and continue supporting his family. The team at Sarvodaya Foundation plans to support him by providing opportunities for skill development to further enhance his earning potential and quality of life.

Gulshan’s journey from despair to independence highlights the power of resilience and compassionate support. His story is a testament to the impact of helping those in need and the profound change it can bring to individuals and society. Assisting individuals in distress is more than just a moral duty, it is also a privilege. It can change lives, bring back self-respect, and create a more caring community.
