Mumbai, June 05, 2026: Tetra Pak India, in collaboration with RUR Greenlife, Reliance Smart, Sahakari Bhandar, and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), has launched a citywide awareness campaign to promote carton recycling and circular economy practices in Mumbai.
Launched on World Environment Day at Veer Baji Prabhu Udyan in Dadar, the initiative is part of the ‘Go Green with Tetra Pak’ programme and features a recycled-material pathway and interactive public installations aimed at encouraging responsible waste management.
The campaign was inaugurated by Mr. Yogesh Desai, Assistant Commissioner, G North Ward, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. A key feature of the initiative is a pathway constructed using paver tiles made from polymer-aluminium (polyal), a material recovered from used beverage cartons. The tiles demonstrate how post-consumer packaging waste can be repurposed into durable infrastructure materials.
The event also saw the unveiling of “Cartons to Creatures,” a series of life-sized animal installations made entirely from recycled aseptic cartons. Designed around the World Environment Day 2026 theme, Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future, the installations aim to raise awareness about recycling through interactive public engagement.
Mr. Yogesh Desai, Assistant Commissioner, G North Ward, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, said: “Mumbai has always led from the front in building an environmentally progressive city, and initiatives like this demonstrate what strong public-private collaboration can achieve. The innovative pathway made using paver tiles recovered from used beverage cartons is a powerful example of how everyday waste can be transformed into durable, real-world infrastructure. At the same time, installations like ‘Cartons to Creatures’ play an important role in making this idea visible and engaging for citizens.”
Mr. Kiran Singh Patil, Assistant Engineer, Solid Waste Management Department, G North Ward, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, said, "Effective waste management goes beyond collection and processing, it requires citizens to understand the value of the materials they discard every day. Initiatives such as this help bridge that gap by demonstrating how used beverage cartons can be transformed into useful and durable products."
Kamlesh Kholiya, Sustainability Manager, Tetra Pak India, added: "At Tetra Pak, we believe that sustainability becomes most powerful when it moves beyond concepts and becomes something people can experience in their everyday lives. By bringing these installations into public spaces, we hope to inspire citizens to see recycling not as a separate activity, but as a simple action that contributes to a larger circular economy."
The campaign is being implemented by RUR Greenlife with support from BMC’s Solid Waste Management and Garden Departments. Volunteers will engage visitors and promote carton recycling through Mumbai’s network of more than 250 collection points, including Reliance Smart and Sahakari Bhandar stores.
Launched in 2010, the Go Green with Tetra Pak programme has supported carton recycling through collection infrastructure and community-focused recycling initiatives across the city.
