Sakina Baker, Head – CSR at Bosch Limited and Head of Bosch India Foundation

In a country as complex and fast-evolving as India, the true measure of progress lies not just in economic growth, but in how deeply it reaches communities on the margins. Bridging this gap requires leaders who can align corporate intent with real social needs in a thoughtful and sustained way. Sakina Baker, Head – CSR at Bosch Limited and Head of Bosch India Foundation, brings over 23 years of experience across corporate and development sectors, shaping initiatives that deliver measurable and lasting impact. A Commonwealth Professional Fellow and Aspire Circle Fellow, she has led programmes that empower youth, strengthen community ecosystems, and foster long-term resilience.

In this article, she reflects on how corporate foundations in India have evolved from simple acts of giving to more structured and long-term approaches to social responsibility. She explains how consistent engagement by businesses has helped underserved communities move from dependence to active participation, and gradually towards self-reliance. Drawing from Bosch’s enduring philosophy of responsible business, she offers insights into building impact that is not only meaningful but also sustainable over time.

Read on to explore how sustained commitment, strong partnerships, and a focus on capability building can create lasting social impact.

Nation building has always extended beyond the economic growth, infrastructure, and policies, especially in developing countries like India. The underserved communities also require targeted support to build resilience, self-reliance and become an important part of the Nation’s progress. Across several states, daily life challenges persist for diverse communities without having sustained solutions. To address these challenges, over centuries the Indian non-profit sector has been providing essential support and working tirelessly towards understanding the need, restoring trust, creating opportunities, leading to dignified survival and fostering societal progress across multiple social development areas, including but not limited to skill development, education, healthcare, environmental protection, livelihoods, etc. and gradually promoting sustainable development.

Joining forces with the non-profit sector and becoming a very important part of this change-making process, hundreds of Corporate Foundations in India have worked extensively and extended support in understanding the need on ground and taken steps to ensure that the impact stays long lasting. Why did the businesses feel the need to establish and manage institutions that focus on addressing the needs of the community ‘beyond the fence’?

As businesses grew in scale and influence, it became more evident that economic success alone could not define their progress. Maintaining a close connect with the community in which they operate was understood as an important part of them being and demonstrating the behaviour of a responsible business; thus, corporate foundations emerged from the realisation that society’s resources, the labour, the environment, and the neighbourhood must receive attention through active social engagement.

Over the years, these foundations moved from mere philanthropy to institutionalising social responsibility, channelling corporate resources into well-thought-off and many a times, long-term social development interventions, ensuring social impact is embedded within organizational values rather than dependent on temporary goodwill. Together, these efforts have helped communities move from dependency to participation, from silence to finding their voice, from survival to lives filled with immense possibilities, and towards knowing and seeking their rights as a citizen of the country.

At Bosch, this philosophy has always reflected in its ethos and guided by its commitment to “Invented for Life”. This approach has resonated globally through the work of Robert Bosch Stiftung, rooted in the legacy of our founder, Robert Bosch. The foundation focuses on areas such as health, education, and global issues, advancing the pursuit of a more just and sustainable future across regions and generations.

Over time, this philosophy has found expression across borders with region specific Bosch Foundations and Charity Centres taking shape in countries like India, China, Brazil, North America, Mexico, Brazil, Romania, Hungary, with the latest one established in Turkey, each adapted to focus on local needs and services. The forms of social engagement may differ, shaped by geography and circumstance however, the purpose remains the same—to create meaningful, lasting impact rooted in dignity, inclusion, and shared responsibility.

Over a century, Bosch in India has also been making constant efforts to touch lives positively, including through its initiatives to address need-based social concerns. As business scaled in India, the need to establish Bosch India Foundation emerged to channel knowledge, efforts and resources into enduring social impact, embedding its core values of creating impact for life rather than sporadic giving.

The Foundation’s growth has also been possible because of Bosch leadership's active participation and encouragement, a dedicated team, employee contribution through volunteering and collaboration with external stakeholders like NGOs, government, corporates and academic institutions who have helped amplify its reach on the ground.

Since 2008, the foundation has been driving Bosch's social initiatives across multiple locations in India, with a focus on skill development, sustainable mobility, education, environmental conservation, preventive healthcare, and rural community development, reaching over 1.26 million beneficiaries. It also takes pride in being the CSR execution arm of the majority of Bosch India legal entities and has been working very closely with multiple like-minded corporates. It stays committed to building the capability of the underserved and amplifying the impact.
