Mumbai, July 27, 2026: National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) and Mahatma Phule Renewable Energy and Infrastructure Technology Limited (MAHAPREIT), a Government of Maharashtra enterprise, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote and finance green, climate-resilient infrastructure across rural India, with Maharashtra as the initial focus.

The partnership combines NABARD's expertise in rural development, climate finance and green infrastructure financing with MAHAPREIT's experience in developing climate-focused infrastructure projects. The collaboration aims to identify, develop, structure and finance sustainable projects that strengthen rural infrastructure, improve climate resilience and enhance the quality of life in villages.

As part of the initial phase, the two organisations will focus on projects related to renewable energy, decarbonisation of government buildings, gram panchayat infrastructure, rural public institutions and water pumping schemes. They also plan to support clean energy deployment in Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) institutions, government hospitals, district hospitals and other public service institutions serving rural communities.

Commenting on the partnership, Dr. Shaji Krishnan V, Chairman, NABARD, said, “NABARD is committed to working with all like-minded stakeholders in furthering a cleaner and greener rural India. We see this MoU with MAHAPREIT as a significant step in this direction.”

The collaboration will also explore financing for biogas and bioenergy projects that utilise agricultural residues and biomass resources, creating additional income opportunities for farmers while promoting the circular economy. In addition, the organisations will work on developing solar-powered micro cold storage infrastructure for village-level institutions to strengthen rural supply chains and agricultural value addition.

The MoU is expected to support the development of sustainable public infrastructure while advancing renewable energy adoption and climate-resilient development in rural India.
