New Delhi, June 08, 2026: HelpAge India and Inspiring Seniors Foundation convene sector leaders on June 9, 2026, to scale a productive ageing model that turns retired citizens into volunteer tutors for underserved youth.

Seniors as Tutors: A Dual Solution to Two National Crises

HelpAge India and Inspiring Seniors Foundation (ISF) will host a landmark roundtable on June 9, bringing together policymakers, gerontologists, academics, and CSR leaders to examine how senior citizens can be repositioned as volunteer tutors, simultaneously addressing post-retirement disengagement and foundational learning gaps among children from underserved communities.

At the centre of the discussion will be ISF's Inspiring Tutors Program, a proof-of-concept initiative that deploys retired citizens as online mentors for students lacking access to quality education. The hybrid event will be held at HelpAge India's New Delhi office and is expected to bring together approximately 30–35 in-person participants alongside online delegates.

The Science Behind Senior Volunteering

Research cited for the roundtable indicates that seniors who volunteer roughly 100 hours annually, approximately two to three hours per week, demonstrate measurable improvements in physical health, reduced loneliness, and lower mortality risk. International precedents, including the US-based Experience Corps and Japan's REPRINTS programme, validate the dual-impact model: elder engagement improves both children's academic outcomes and seniors' cognitive well-being.

From Proof of Concept to National Scale

The roundtable, supported by TheCSRUniverse as Impact Advocacy Partner, aims to identify three to five ecosystem partners capable of expanding the programme across schools, colleges, and community platforms. Proceedings are expected to contribute to a formal Knowledge Paper on productive ageing and intergenerational engagement.

A special address by Dr Nachiket Mor, an eminent public health expert, will offer a strategic perspective on scalable social models and pathways for national adoption.

Reframing How India Views Its Elderly

India's ageing population has historically been framed within narratives of dependency and care. This initiative proposes a structural alternative, one in which seniors serve as educators, mentors, and community contributors, generating societal value across generations while retaining purpose and cognitive vitality in their post-retirement years.

According to the organisers, the long-term vision is a scalable hybrid model that embeds intergenerational engagement into India's institutional fabric.
