New Delhi, May 15, 2026: Compass Group India has partnered with Global Food Partners to support cage-free egg production and strengthen higher animal welfare practices in India’s egg supply chain.

According to the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, India produced an estimated 149.11 billion eggs in 2024–25, making it the world’s second-largest egg producer. However, a large portion of production continues to rely on conventional battery cage systems.

As part of the initiative, Compass Group India has purchased around 4,000 cage-free credits through GFP’s Impact Incentives programme. Each credit offsets the purchase of 1,000 caged eggs, amounting to a total of four million eggs. The funds will support three Indian farms — U and V Agro, Hensway India, and Happy Hens Farm — in expanding cage-free production capacity and improving logistics infrastructure.

The companies stated that the initiative aims to address current supply-chain limitations in cage-free egg availability while encouraging long-term transition towards alternative production systems.

In addition, the Compass Group Foundation, along with Compass Group India and other partners, has launched a cage-free and free-range training centre near Bengaluru, with GFP serving as the technical partner. The centre will train local farmers on cage-free farming systems, egg production practices, and sustainable farm management.

Commenting on the initiative, GFP CEO Elissa Lane said, “Compass Group India has shown enormous leadership and innovation in not only their own cage-free commitments, but also in driving substantial, foundational change in how eggs are produced and supplied throughout India. Their commitment to responsible sourcing extends to the new training centre that meaningfully supports farmers and strengthens the nation’s food system.”

According to the organisations, the training facility is expected to support farmers in transitioning to cage-free systems while improving long-term sustainability and profitability in egg production.

Global Food Partners noted that several international companies, including Kellanova, Best Western Hotels, Lagardère Travel Retail, and PizzaExpress, have also adopted Impact Incentives as part of their cage-free sourcing strategies.
