Cairn Reports 25% Reduction in Carbon Emissions Over Five Years

New Delhi, June 06, 2026: Cairn, Vedanta Oil & Gas, has reported a reduction of approximately 25% in its absolute carbon emissions over the last five years as part of its ongoing decarbonisation efforts across operational sites.

The company stated that it currently mitigates around 410,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions annually through various sustainability initiatives. These efforts include afforestation, water conservation, methane reduction, and ecosystem restoration projects across its operational regions in Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, and the North-East.

According to the company, around 800,000 saplings have been planted over the past three years as part of its target to plant 2 million trees by 2030. The plantation programme forms part of its broader strategy to enhance carbon sequestration and support biodiversity conservation.

Cairn said its environmental initiatives are aligned with the World Environment Day 2026 theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.” The company has also undertaken land restoration activities across approximately 4,000 acres in its operational areas.

In addition to afforestation efforts, Cairn reported recycling more than 86% of water used in its operations during FY26. The company also recovered 155,393 barrels of hydrocarbons through oil sludge processing and conserved nearly 0.98 million kilolitres of water through resource management initiatives.

The company has further strengthened its methane management programme and achieved Gold Standard Pathway status for the reporting year 2025 under the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership (OGMP) 2.0, the United Nations Environment Programme’s flagship methane reporting and mitigation framework.

As part of its future climate commitments, Cairn has pledged to reduce absolute methane emissions by 30% over the next five years.

The company said these measures form part of its broader sustainability roadmap as it advances towards its long-term Net Zero Carbon goals while continuing oil and gas exploration and production operations in India.
