Patna, March 21, 2026: The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has released two thematic SDG Bulletins—“Planet in Focus: Advancing Environmental Sustainability under the SDGs” and “Delivering Prosperity at Scale: India’s Economic Transformation through the SDGs”—during a capacity-building workshop held in Patna, Bihar.
The bulletins are part of a new series aligned with the five pillars of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development—People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace, and Partnerships. They aim to present a data-driven overview of India’s progress on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), drawing from the National Indicator Framework (NIF) Progress Report, 2025.
The Planet bulletin highlights India’s advancements in environmental sustainability across SDGs related to clean water and sanitation, responsible consumption, climate action, and biodiversity conservation. It notes key achievements such as universal Open Defecation Free (ODF) status across districts under the Swachh Bharat Mission and the expansion of waste recycling infrastructure from 829 facilities in 2019–20 to 3,036 in 2024–25. The report also highlights that 97.2% of schools had gender-segregated toilets in 2023–24, reflecting progress in sanitation and gender equity.
Additionally, the bulletin underscores India’s growing focus on disaster risk reduction and climate resilience, aligned with global frameworks such as the Sendai Framework.
The Prosperity bulletin focuses on inclusive economic growth and development across areas such as clean energy, infrastructure, employment, and urban sustainability. It highlights that India is now the fourth-largest wind energy producer globally, with renewable energy’s share in installed electricity capacity increasing from 16.02% in 2015–16 to 22.13% in 2024–25.
The report also notes a decline in carbon intensity of the power sector, from 61.45 tonnes CO₂ per ₹ crore in 2015–16 to 40.52 tonnes in 2022–23, indicating progress toward low-carbon growth. Near-universal electrification, rising digital connectivity with over 99% mobile network coverage, and the expansion of the tourism sector contributing 2.60% to GDP in 2022–23 were also highlighted.
Through these bulletins, MoSPI aims to provide accessible insights into India’s SDG progress, showcasing key policy initiatives, national achievements, and ongoing efforts toward sustainable development across environmental and economic dimensions.
