Mumbai, February 23, 2026: The JSW Group, in collaboration with the Government of Assam, has commenced construction of a heritage museum in Guwahati following the laying of the foundation stone.

The foundation stone was laid by the Chief Minister of Assam, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Sajjan Jindal, Chairman, JSW Group. The event was attended by Savitri Jindal, Sangita Jindal, Shri Bimal Borah, Minister for Cultural Affairs, Government of Assam, and Richard Blurton, Museum Curator and Former Head of South and Southeast Asia at the British Museum.

The museum is being developed at the Sericulture Farm in Khanapara on a 45,000-square-foot site allotted by the Government of Assam. The construction is fully funded by the JSW Group. The project has been conceived as a cultural institution focused on the preservation and documentation of Assam’s art, culture and heritage. The facility will host national and international artefacts, curated exhibitions and cultural showcases.

Sajjan Jindal, Chairman, JSW Group, said, “The ground-breaking of this museum marks the beginning of a deeply meaningful journey. At JSW, we believe cultural institutions play a vital role in shaping the society’s identity and inspiring future generations. This museum is our tribute to Assam’s extraordinary artistic and spiritual legacy, and our commitment to creating a world-class space that places Indian heritage at the heart of global cultural conversations.”

The museum will include conservation facilities equipped with climate control and security systems for the preservation of artefacts. It is being developed as a long-term partnership between the Government of Assam and JSW Group.

One of the key exhibits planned for the museum is the 17th-century Vrindavani Vastra, a devotional textile woven under the spiritual guidance of Srimanta Sankardev. The textile comprises multiple woven silk panels depicting scenes from the Bhagavata Purana, including episodes such as Kaliyadamana and Vastraharana from Krishna’s early life in Vrindavan.

The museum is intended to support cultural documentation and provide a platform for presenting Assam’s heritage at national and international levels.
