New Delhi, June 09, 2023. In response to the escalating conflict and displacement crisis in Sudan, the IKEA Foundation has pledged more than €11 million in emergency humanitarian aid. The foundation will donate €5 million to Médecins Sans Frontières - Doctors Without Borders (MSF) for urgent medical care and supplies, while €6.7 million will be provided to Better Shelter to address the immediate shelter needs of the displaced population.
Since the outbreak of violence in Sudan on April 15, approximately 1.4 million people have been displaced within Sudan or have sought refuge in neighboring countries. The conflict has spread beyond Khartoum, leading to overwhelmed local hospitals grappling with the influx of individuals sustaining serious injuries from gunshots, explosions, and airstrikes. Sudan's already strained health system is now facing an overwhelming surge in demand and scarcity of supplies.
Stephen Cornish, Director General of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) - Geneva Operational Centre, highlighted the crucial humanitarian relief work being carried out by MSF teams in Sudan. "MSF teams have been treating war-wounded individuals, delivering healthcare services, and ensuring access to water and sanitation across 10 states in Sudan." He also conveyed his appreciation for the €5 million contribution from the IKEA Foundation, emphasizing its significant role in providing humanitarian and medical aid to those most affected by the ongoing crisis. "We deeply appreciate the steadfast support of the IKEA Foundation," Cornish added.
The IKEA Foundation's donation to MSF will enable the organization to provide vital medical care and supplies to the conflict-affected population in Sudan. This funding will also support MSF's extensive operations throughout the region.
In response to the pressing need for shelter, the IKEA Foundation will contribute €6.7 million to Better Shelter. The organization will deploy 3,000 shelter units to meet the immediate shelter needs of the displaced individuals, including those seeking refuge in neighboring countries like Chad and Ethiopia. The provision of shelter is crucial for physical protection, emotional healing, and recovery from the traumatic experiences endured by the affected population.
Johan Mast, Acting Manager Director of Better Shelter, underscored the alarming situation in Sudan and expressed gratitude for the support from the IKEA Foundation. "The current situation in Sudan is alarming," Mast stated. "We are very grateful for the IKEA Foundation stepping in to assist and pleased to offer shelter to 15,000 individuals affected by the crisis. Shelter is a fundamental human need that provides physical protection and helps with emotional healing and recovery from the traumatic experiences they have endured," he added.
Per Heggenes, CEO of the IKEA Foundation, emphasized the responsibility to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the devastating conflict. Heggenes called upon other funders to join the effort in delivering life-saving humanitarian assistance to Sudan. He urged all parties involved in the conflict to safeguard health facilities and enable safe humanitarian access.
As the conflict in Sudan continues to escalate, the international community remains focused on providing immediate aid and support to mitigate the humanitarian crisis in the region. The IKEA Foundation's significant commitment aims to make a tangible difference in the lives of those devastated by the conflict and alleviate their suffering.
