The HiWEL Learning Station programme traces its origins to the Hole-in-the-Wall experiment led by Sugata Mitra, an Indian education researcher and professor known for his work on self-directed learning. Now implemented in India by the NIIT Foundation, the initiative focuses on creating open, community-based digital learning spaces for children from underserved backgrounds. Built on the idea of Minimally Invasive Education, it enables children to explore computers on their own or in groups, learning through curiosity, collaboration, and peer interaction rather than formal instruction. Over time, these spaces have helped children build familiarity with technology while also strengthening confidence and problem-solving abilities. Within this context, individual journeys offer a clearer view of how the model works in practice. Sonakshi’s story reflects how sustained exposure to such an environment can gradually transform a hesitant learner into a confident guide for others.

From Learner to Leader: Sonakshi’s Story

Fourteen-year-old Sonakshi, a Class 9 student, has been visiting the HiWEL Learning Station for the past four years. What began as a curious visit gradually evolved into a journey of discovery, confidence, and leadership.

When she first arrived at the centre, Sonakshi was shy and unfamiliar with computers. Over time, her curiosity drew her back regularly, and she began learning through exploration. Today, she says that most of her computer skills have come from her time at HiWEL.

Her role has also evolved. She now supports new learners, helping them understand basic computer functions such as opening programmes and accessing educational content. For her, this comes naturally. She recalls needing similar help when she first started and now finds value in offering that support to others.

Sonakshi particularly enjoys using MS Paint to express her creativity and spends time on Kaleidoscope creating content linked to her school subjects. Science is her favourite subject, and she often uses the internet to better understand topics she finds challenging, which has made her more independent in her studies.

Beyond academics, she enjoys dancing and hopes to become a dance teacher one day. She sees both learning and creative expression as equally important parts of her growth.

A significant moment in her journey came when she helped her younger sister learn basic computer skills. Her sister, who had struggled earlier, was able to pass a computer test with Sonakshi’s support. For Sonakshi, this was a meaningful achievement and a reminder of how far she has come.

For her, the HiWEL Learning Station is not just a place to access computers but a space that has shaped her confidence, independence, and willingness to help others.
