BLR Airport Inaugurates In-House Integrated Solid Waste Management Centre to Boost Circular Economy Practices

Bengaluru, January 07, 2026: Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru (BLR Airport) has inaugurated an in-house Integrated Solid Waste Management Centre (ISWMC) as part of its sustainability and responsible resource management efforts. The facility enables scientific, end-to-end waste processing on campus and is expected to divert nearly 97–98% of the airport’s waste away from landfills

BLR Airport currently generates around 24–26 tonnes of solid waste per day from terminal operations, airside activities, commercial establishments, and allied facilities. The new ISWMC strengthens waste management at source, reduces dependence on external handlers, minimises transportation-related environmental risks, and contributes to lower emissions and improved regulatory compliance. With the centre operational, landfill disposal is expected to be limited to just 2–3% of total waste.

The ISWMC has a total processing capacity of 77 tonnes per day. Organic waste, up to 50 TPD, is treated using bio-methanation technology, converting biodegradable waste into compressed biogas (CBG) for use in airport kitchens, along with compost and liquid organic manure for landscaping. The remaining 27 TPD of inorganic waste is processed through advanced segregation systems, with recyclables sent to authorised recycling partners and recoverable material used for co-processing in the cement industry.

Speaking at the inauguration, Hari Marar, MD & CEO, Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), said, “As a rapidly growing airport, we are conscious of the responsibility that comes with managing our environmental footprint. At BLR Airport, sustainability is about creating long-term value for people, the community, and the environment. The Integrated Solid Waste Management Centre strengthens our ability to manage waste at source, transform it into a resource, and embed circular economy principles into everyday operations. This initiative reinforces our commitment to resilient infrastructure and responsible growth as we scale for the future.”

The commissioning of the ISWMC further reinforces BLR Airport’s sustainability credentials. The airport is the first in Asia to achieve Level 5 Accreditation under ACI’s Airport Carbon Accreditation programme, reflecting a 95.6% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions and the achievement of net-zero status well ahead of its 2030 target. BLR Airport has also received multiple ACI Green Airports Recognition awards for initiatives related to renewable energy, plastics circularity, and climate-resilient infrastructure.

The facility complements BIAL’s Behavioural Change – Sustainable Transformation Programme, which aims to promote responsible waste segregation and disposal among passengers, partners, and employees. Recent initiatives include the “Namma Airport, Namma Responsibility” anti-litter campaign to improve segregation at source and maximise the effectiveness of the new waste management centre.

Aligned with BIAL’s sustainability vision of integrating economic, social, and environmental priorities, the ISWMC demonstrates how large-scale infrastructure can embed circular economy principles while delivering measurable environmental outcomes.
