Kerala, July 05, 2025: A specially designed, accessible home has been handed over to the family of Nisaan and Nissi, two intellectually challenged siblings, in Veliyambam, Pulpally. The house was built under the 'MAGIK Homes' (Making Accessible Gateways for Inclusive Kerala) initiative led by the Different Art Centre (DAC).

The 600-square-foot residence, constructed to meet the specific needs of the children, was formally handed over during a ceremony officiated by poet and lyricist Murukan Kattakada. He presented the keys to the children in the presence of their parents, Saijan and Joicey. The event was attended by T S Dileep Kumar, President of Pulppally Grama Panchayath, Dr. Jomet Kothavazhikal, Ward Member, Aryaprakash, Assistant Professor at R. Shankar Memorial SNDP Yogam Arts & Science College, Koyilandy, and Mr. Gopinath Muthukad, Executive Director of DAC.

Previously living in a makeshift shed under severe economic constraints, the family was identified by the DAC selection committee as a priority case.

“Our children had long harboured the dream of a stable home. Their joy at its realisation is overwhelming,” said Joicey. The home was constructed on land donated by local resident Kuriakose, reflecting strong community support. “This endeavour was brought to fruition solely through the kindness and collaborative spirit of the community,” Joicey added.

The house was designed and constructed under the supervision of Simson Cheenikkuzhy from Jude Constructions. It incorporates accessible features to support the children’s physical and educational needs. Nisaan and Nissi are currently students at Kripalaya Special School in Pulpally.

The Wayanad home is the fourth to be completed under the MAGIK Homes project, which aims to build one accessible home in each of Kerala’s 14 districts. Previous homes have been handed over in Kasaragod, Idukki, and Malappuram.

“It is our sincere hope that these disability-friendly homes constructed under the 'MAGIK Homes' project will serve as a compelling inspiration for other charitable organizations and individuals to undertake similar humanitarian initiatives,” said Gopinath Muthukad. The project aims to establish a replicable model for inclusive housing, promoting comfort, independence, and dignity for families with disabled members.
