Pune, January 15, 2026: Hyundai Motor India Foundation (HMIF), the CSR arm of Hyundai Motor India Limited, has completed the plantation of one million trees across 90.5 acres near Talegaon, Pune, marking one of the largest single-site urban forest developments in Maharashtra within a year.
Developed under the IONIQ Forest initiative, the project uses the Miyawaki afforestation method and includes 41 native tree species. The dense plantation is expected to enhance local biodiversity and contribute significantly to climate resilience. According to projections, the forest could absorb nearly 63,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide over the next five years.
The initiative began with site preparation in May 2025, followed by plantation activities launched on World Environment Day in June 2025. The forest was officially inaugurated in September 2025 by Devendra Fadnavis, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra. To ensure transparency and long-term monitoring, each tree has been geo-tagged and linked to a QR code, allowing real-time tracking of growth and maintenance.
Puneet Anand, AVP & Vertical Head – Corporate Affairs, Corporate Communication & Social, HMIL, said,“Hyundai Motor India Foundation’s IONIQ Forest project is more than an afforestation effort, it represents a vision to create a greener and more sustainable future. By combining environmental restoration with community empowerment, Hyundai is setting a benchmark for sustainable growth in India. What makes this achievement truly significant is the successful plantation of 1 million trees within a quick span of less than a year at one contiguous location, reinforcing Hyundai’s commitment to environmental stewardship, climate action and responsible growth, as it expands its footprint in Maharashtra.”
In addition to its environmental impact, the project has generated sustainable livelihood opportunities for over 150 members of local tribal communities, integrating ecological restoration with inclusive development. Once fully established, the forest is expected to serve as an outdoor learning and awareness space for schools and nearby communities.
The initiative forms part of HMIF’s broader CSR commitment in Maharashtra, backed by an investment of ₹56 crore across focus areas including environmental sustainability, healthcare, road safety and community development.
