Hindustan Zinc begins using LNG Vehicle towards scaling down carbon emission

Udaipur (Rajasthan), January 20, 2023: Hindustan Zinc has deployed the first Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) powered truck vehicle, a step towards scaling down the carbon emission in its distribution system. A 55 metric tonne Alternate Fuel Vehicle from Greenline, part of the Essar Group, will be used in the transportation of the finished product from the smelter to consumer. According to the official, the LNG vehicle will bring down the carbon emission by 30% in comparison to a diesel vehicle.

Hindustan Zinc, a Vedanta Group Company, is one of the world’s largest and India’s only integrated producer of Zinc-Lead and Silver. The company has set stringent goals towards Net Zero emission by 2050.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Arun Misra, CEO Hindustan Zinc, said, “Our vision of net-zero by 2050 is driven by the philosophy of Transforming the Planet and creating green value for all our stakeholders. By taking the approach of introducing LNG vehicles, we are showing our commitment to leading the green transport revolution. Hindustan Zinc aims to decarbonize the environment by delivering an immediate solution and significantly reducing economic barriers.”

The LNG Vehicle introduced by the company in its operational cycle has capacity of carrying 40 tonnes of raw material and can speed upto 80 kmph. This vehicle, according to officials, will drive the company ahead on their sustainable value-accretive journey and strengthen their sustainability focus by delivering on well-defined goals.  

For the emission control, the company has also introduced Fuel Catalyst in HEMMs for underground mine operation to enhance fuel efficiency and lower exhaust pollution.

The company is amongst the Top 15 CSR Spenders in India and it is currently reaching out to 1.4 million people in 234 villages out of which 184 are in Rajasthan, and 34 in Uttarakhand. As a market leader, Hindustan Zinc governs about 80% of the Zinc market in India.
