Udaipur, March 03, 2026: Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL) has reported 26.3% women representation across its workforce, marking the highest level of gender diversity in India’s metals and mining sector.

The company employs over 745 women professionals, including more than 314 women engineers and equivalent professionals in core operational roles across underground mines, smelters and technical functions. Women employees are engaged in frontline responsibilities such as operating heavy machinery, working night shifts, participating in mine rescue operations and managing underground mining activities.

Hindustan Zinc has introduced several initiatives aimed at expanding women’s participation in traditionally male-dominated roles. These include the early deployment of women in underground mining, the formation of an all-women underground mine rescue team and inclusion of women in night-shift roles across mining and smelting operations.

To further promote women’s participation in the sector, the company has launched a 25-day nationwide campaign titled “She Knows the Ground She Stands On.” The campaign highlights the role of science and technology in modern mining operations and showcases women professionals leading operational and technical functions.

As part of the initiative, around 15 women from leading science institutions were invited to experience Hindustan Zinc’s mining ecosystem firsthand. The programme included interactions with operational teams, exposure to digital mining technologies and leadership environments, and insights into career pathways in mining and metallurgy.

Hindustan Zinc has integrated Industry 4.0 practices, robotics, automation and real-time analytics across its operations. Its digital mines use tele-remote underground operations, drone-based surveillance and remote blasting systems to improve safety and operational efficiency.

Mr. Arun Misra, CEO, Hindustan Zinc, said, “Empowering women in mining is not merely a matter of equity, it is a strategic imperative for the future of the industry. At Hindustan Zinc, a culture has been cultivated where women lead from the front—whether operating underground mines, driving automation, or advancing sustainable metallurgy. ‘She Knows the Ground She Stands On’ reflects a commitment to challenging outdated norms and ensuring that every capable woman has the opportunity to grow and excel. As the company works toward achieving 30% diversity by 2030, the focus remains on building a workplace where inclusion fuels innovation and gender is never a barrier to excellence.”

The company also offers workplace policies such as a spouse hiring policy, one-year childcare sabbatical and flexible work options. Employees reside in integrated townships near operational sites with access to schools, healthcare and recreational facilities.

The campaign will conclude on March 8, 2026, with a showcase of experiences from participating students and women professionals.
