CSR in North-East India: Tripura stands out, more than 200% growth in Meghalaya, Sikkim, Manipur

New Delhi, 2 February 2021: CSR funds spend in India’s north-eastern region has witnessed sharp growth over the past five years with Corporate houses increasingly giving importance to north-eastern states in their CSR planning and budget. The regioncomprising eight states - Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura - also saw participation of companies increasing rapidly over 2014-19.

According to the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA), 4 out of the 8 north-eastern states recorded over 200 % jump in CSR funding in the period between 2014-15 to 2018-19. During the same period, the national average of CSR spent increased by around 85 per cent.

Tripura stands out

The state of Tripura performed exceptionally well with the CSR fund inflow in the state growing to more than Rs 23 Cr in 2018-19 from a mere Rs 1.33 Cr CSR fund in 2014-15.

Meghalaya Sikkim, Manipur record 200% growth

Tripura was followed by Meghalaya which witnessed a growth of more than 350 % in the CSR fund. Sikkim and Manipur recorded a growth of 285% and 213 % respectively in the inflow of CSR funds.  

Mizoram is the only exception

Mizoram was the only state where CSR fund dropped to 10 per cent of what it was five years back in 2014-15. The state received only Rs 10 lakh in the year 2018-19 as compared to more than Rs 1 Cr in 2014-15.

More companies investing in CSR activities

The number of companies investing in CSR activities in the state also doubled during the period of 2014-19. For example, the state of Assam had only 59 companies undertaking CSR activities in the year 2014-15. The number grew more than double with a total of 124 companies participating in the CSR activities in the states in the financial year 2018-19..

According to the MCA data, Assam continues to be the biggest beneficiary of the CSR funds coming to the region. The state gets almost 72 % of the total fund coming to the north-east region.
