TOTO Begins Green Hydrogen-Powered Sanitaryware Production
New Delhi, September 21, 2026: TOTO Ltd., the Japanese bathroom solutions company, has announced that it has become the world’s first sanitaryware manufacturer to conduct commercial production using green hydrogen in the firing process. The achievement has been recognised by Euromonitor International, according to the company.
The milestone was achieved at TOTO Kokura, the company’s No. 1 plant in Japan, as part of its efforts to reduce emissions from sanitaryware manufacturing. TOTO said developments in firing technology and the adoption of cleaner fuels have contributed to lower carbon emissions at the facility.
The company has transitioned from coal-fired kilns to its latest fiber ion furnace, which it says has contributed to an approximately 40% reduction in CO₂ emissions since 2022. The use of green hydrogen in the firing process is expected to support further reductions as TOTO works towards its goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
The company said the development is part of its broader efforts to improve firing technology and transition to cleaner fuels while maintaining established product quality standards.

The company said the use of green hydrogen in sanitaryware firing represents an additional step in its manufacturing decarbonisation efforts and forms part of its longer-term carbon neutrality strategy.
