Suzlon’s S144 Certified as India’s Lowest Carbon Footprint Wind Turbine Solution

Pune, September 02, 2025: Suzlon Group has announced that its Made-in-India wind turbine model, the S144, has been certified as the country’s lowest carbon footprint wind turbine solution. The turbine recorded a Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) of just 6.17 grams of CO₂ per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity generated across its full lifecycle, significantly below industry averages.

The certification was independently verified by the Indian Register Quality Systems (IRQS) under international standards including ISO/IEC 17029:2019, ISO 14067:2018, and ISO 14021:2016 + Amd 1:2021. Additionally, TÜV SÜD Poland also verified the S144 as a low-carbon footprint wind solution.

According to Suzlon, the achievement was made possible through several sustainability-focused measures, such as optimized design, the use of recycled and scrap steel, local sourcing, and renewable energy in manufacturing. The turbine incorporates low-carbon steel with less than 2.2 t CO₂e per tonne of production and sources 83.25% of its components locally from Tier-1 Indian suppliers. The company has also extended the product lifecycle to 25 years.

Mr. JP Chalasani, Chief Executive Officer, Suzlon Group, said, “True Sustainability leadership means embedding sustainability into organizational process, product level, and across the value chain—not treating it as an add-on. At Suzlon, this has been our philosophy for over 30 years. The S144’s independently verified lowest carbon footprint reflects this commitment, showing how responsible design, sourcing, and manufacturing can deliver real impact. With the S144, we prove that world-class clean energy can be designed and built sustainably in India. Our next step is to move from lowest-carbon manufacturing to true circularity, setting new benchmarks for the renewable energy industry.”

Suzlon emphasized that the S144 demonstrates the potential for renewable energy solutions to contribute to India’s clean energy goals by reducing emissions while ensuring cost efficiency and long-term performance.

The company currently manages 15.2 GW of wind energy assets in India and an additional \~6 GW outside the country. Globally, Suzlon has installed around 21.2 GW of wind energy capacity across 17 countries.
