Reviving India’s Civilisational Legacy: Nalanda Museum Reopens with Immersive Technology

Nalanda, May 18, 2026: The historic Nalanda Museum has reopened to the public following a major technological and experiential upgrade aimed at enhancing visitor engagement through immersive storytelling and digital experiences.

The project was undertaken by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) with support from Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. The initiative was guided by IIT Delhi’s Department of Design, including Sabyasachi Paldas, Professor of Practice, and Aakash Johry, Assistant Professor, along with Anand Madhukar, Additional Director General (Administration), ASI, and ASI Museum Director Mr. Vasant.

The institutions collaborated with Vizara Technologies Pvt. Ltd. to modernise the museum infrastructure and visitor experience.

One of the key additions to the upgraded museum is a 360-degree immersive hall designed to showcase the history, culture and global significance of ancient Nalanda through digital storytelling. The project also focused on creating educational content for students, tourists and history enthusiasts.

According to the organisers, the museum upgrade aims to make historical learning more interactive and accessible through the use of immersive technologies. On the reopening day, the museum witnessed participation from hundreds of visitors, including school students, who explored the digital exhibits and immersive experiences.

ASI and IIT supported us throughout the journey, and together we worked as one team to bring this museum back to life again. The reopening of Nalanda Museum coincided with International Museum Day and marks a step towards integrating technology with heritage conservation and public education. The museum is now open to visitors.
