Gurugram, August 12, 2026: PayU has launched its Accessible Payments Checkout, a payment interface designed to enable blind and visually impaired users to complete online transactions more independently.
PayU said the new checkout is India’s first RBI-compliant payment checkout designed specifically for people who are blind or visually impaired. The launch also makes PayU the first payment gateway in India to comply with the Reserve Bank of India’s October 2024 accessibility mandate, BIS IS 17802, according to the company.
The accessibility-focused checkout includes features aimed at improving navigation and interaction for users with visual and cognitive accessibility needs. These include screen-reader optimisation, adaptive user profiles, visual inclusivity modes and text resizing.
The screen-reader optimisation enables users to navigate the payment process through voice commands, from selecting payment methods such as net banking, UPI, QR and NEFT to confirming the payment amount and completing the transaction.
The adaptive user profiles allow users to customise elements such as cursor size, button dimensions and navigation aids. Users can save, switch or reset their preferences based on their requirements.
The checkout also offers visual inclusivity modes such as high contrast, greyscale, colour inversion and saturation adjustments for users with low vision, colour blindness or light sensitivity. Its text-resizing feature allows text to be increased up to 200% of the standard size without overlapping or hiding content.
Manas Mishra, Chief Product Officer, PayU and Wibmo, said, “True financial inclusion is only possible when every individual can access and use digital payments independently. At PayU, accessibility is not an afterthought - it's a core design principle. With the launch of our Accessibility Checkout, we're helping merchants deliver payment experiences that are inclusive by design while enabling millions of users with diverse accessibility needs to participate more confidently in India’s digital economy. This is an important step towards supporting the RBI's accessibility vision and building digital infrastructure that works for everyone.”
Prashant Ranjan Verma, General Secretary, National Association for the Blind, Delhi, said, “I appreciate PayU's efforts to make digital payments more accessible for everyone, including people who are blind or have low vision. I was able to complete a UPI payment independently using PayU's accessibility-first checkout with VoiceOver. I hope PayU continues to strengthen accessibility so that more people with visual impairments can transact confidently and independently.”
PayU said merchants using its payment gateway will not need to make changes to their existing integrations to offer the accessible checkout. The accessibility features are embedded into the checkout experience, allowing merchants to provide an accessibility-focused payment interface to customers with disabilities.
The launch comes ahead of Independence Day and places digital accessibility within the broader push to enable wider participation in India’s digital economy.
