New Delhi, June 08, 2026: NITI Aayog has released a new report, School Education System in India: Temporal Analysis and Policy Roadmap for Quality Enhancement, offering a comprehensive assessment of India's school education landscape and outlining a roadmap to improve learning outcomes, equity, governance, and overall educational quality.
The report analyses the performance of states and Union Territories across key dimensions of school education and identifies both progress and persistent challenges in the sector. While India has made significant gains in access and enrolment, the report highlights continuing gaps in foundational literacy and numeracy, learning outcomes, infrastructure, teacher availability, and educational equity.
Emphasising the importance of foundational learning as the basis for long-term human capital development, the report calls for sustained investments in early-grade education, teacher capacity building, effective school leadership, and data-driven governance. It notes that strengthening school education is critical to achieving broader social and economic development goals.

Among its key recommendations, NITI Aayog advocates a "Whole-of-Society" approach to school quality improvement, recognising that educational outcomes are shaped by efforts extending beyond the education system alone. The report proposes greater collaboration among governments, local communities, School Management Committees, academic institutions, civil society organisations, philanthropic foundations, industry bodies, and other stakeholders to support school improvement and student learning.
The report also recommends strengthening assessment systems, improving monitoring and accountability mechanisms, expanding inclusive education, leveraging technology to enhance learning, and addressing disparities in educational outcomes across states and regions.
Prepared by NITI Aayog's Education Division, the report is intended to support the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and contribute to building a more equitable, inclusive, and future-ready school education system.
As education remains a foundational pillar of social development, the report underscores the need for coordinated action to ensure that every child has access to quality learning opportunities and the skills needed to thrive in the future.
