Nirvana Naturopathy Launches Initiative to Protect Ailing Cows

Nashik, August 17, 2026: Nirvana Naturopathy & Retreat has launched an animal welfare and rural livelihood initiative aimed at supporting farmers who face financial difficulties when cattle become elderly, ill or stop producing milk.

Under the initiative, the retreat will offer farmers ₹5,000 per cow as compensation for non-milking or ailing cattle, compared with the ₹1,000–₹2,000 that farmers may receive through distress sales, according to the organisation. The rescued cattle will then be relocated to a dedicated sanctuary within the retreat’s ecosystem.

The initiative seeks to address the economic pressure faced by smallholder farmers who may struggle to meet the ongoing maintenance and medical costs of ageing or injured cattle. By offering an alternative to distress sales, Nirvana Naturopathy & Retreat plans to provide farmers with financial support while taking responsibility for the animals’ long-term care.

"In our rural ecosystem, cattle are central to both agriculture and our cultural ethos, yet they become profoundly vulnerable the moment commercial output drops," said Gurumaa, Founder of Nirvana Naturopathy & Retreat. "Financial desperation should never compel a farmer to abandon or sell a lifelong companion to slaughter. By offering 2.5 times the going market rate, we alleviate immediate economic pressure for farming families, while taking complete responsibility for the animal's lifetime care, dignified health management, and peace."

The rescued cattle will be housed at the sanctuary near Lake Beale, Igatpuri, and integrated with Gurumaa’s animal welfare initiative, Gokuldham Gaushala. According to the organisation, each animal will be catalogued and tagged, with individual health profiles maintained for veterinary monitoring, nutrition and rehabilitation.

The programme combines direct financial assistance to farming households with animal identification, health tracking and dedicated sanctuary infrastructure. Nirvana Naturopathy & Retreat said it plans to expand the shelter’s capacity to accommodate hundreds of rescued cattle in the coming months.
