Maharashtra consistently captures highest CSR funding share; RIL remains top contributor

With CSR funding of more than Rs 2,800 Cr, the western state of Maharashtra has remained on the top of CSR agenda with the state consistently getting the largest share of CSR funding from top companies.

With its capital - Mumbai, being the financial hub and headquarters of many top companies including top Banking institutions, the state has unique advantage of getting highest priority for local CSR activities.

The state received a massive CSR funding of Rs 2,847 Cr in 2018-19 as compared to just Rs 1,446 Cr in 2014-15. The overall CSR funding to different states in the country amounted close to Rs 18,655 Cr. 

Maharashtra CSR Funding growth outpace national growth 

Apart from cutting the biggest share of CSR funding among the states, Maharashtra also witnessed a CSR funding growth which outpaced the national average growth in CSR funding. As per the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, the state witnessed CSR funding growth of 97 % as compared to the national average of close to 85 %.

The overall CSR funding in India grew from Rs 10,066 Cr in 2014-15 to Rs 18,655 Cr in 2018-19.

More corporates pitching with CSR activities 

The growth in CSR funding to the state was also fueled by more companies introducing their CSR activities in the state. According to the MCA, during the period of 2014-19, the number of companies undertaking CSR activities in the state grew by close to 150 %.

In 2014-15, there were only 1399 companies doing CSR projects in the state. This number grew to a total of 3480 companies in the year 2018-19.

During the same period, the coverage of CSR activity also widened in the state.

RIL remains top CSR contributor

Over the years, Reliance Industries Limited has remained the top contributor to the CSR activities in the state.

The company spent a total of Rs 579 Cr on different CSR projects in the state in the year 2018-19.  The company had spent a similar amount in 2014-15 also.

Bajaj Auto and JSW Steel stand at a distant 2nd and third position with CSR contribution of Rs 49.5 Cr and Rs 47 Cr respectively in 2018-19.
