New Delhi, November 20, 2025: Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Founder and Chairperson of Biocon Group, has been named the second most generous woman philanthropist in the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2025, with contributions worth ₹83 crore toward science, research and education.
The 2025 edition of the list recognises 24 prominent women philanthropists for their contributions across sectors such as ecosystem building, research and development, education, rural upliftment, and water conservation.
Mazumdar-Shaw said she was “deeply honored to be featured on the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2025,” adding, “For me, philanthropy has never been about the magnitude of giving, but about giving with a purpose… investing in science, research, and innovation can unlock transformative solutions for humanity.”
According to the report, Mazumdar-Shaw’s philanthropic outreach through Mazumdar Shaw Philanthropy (MSP) focuses on supporting top research institutions and creating enabling ecosystems for scientific advancement and cultural preservation. The foundation works to strengthen research capabilities at Indian and global institutions, support artistic expression, and promote community development.

The pharmaceutical sector emerged as the biggest contributor to philanthropy in the 2025 list, accounting for 16% of the total philanthropists featured, followed by software & services, automobile, and chemicals sectors.
Since its inception, MSP has focused on areas such as transformative global research, affordable healthcare access, and nurturing breakthrough ideas across scientific and social domains. Mazumdar-Shaw has earlier received national and international recognition for her efforts to advance innovation and expand access to quality healthcare.
The EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List, now in its 12th edition, identifies individuals who donated ₹5 crore or more during the review period, based on data gathered from entrepreneurs, public disclosures, and foundations.
Biocon Group, led by Mazumdar-Shaw, continues to be a key contributor to India’s biotechnology sector through its focus on generics, biosimilars, and contract research, with an emphasis on expanding global access to affordable medicines.
