Mumbai, May 31, 2025: Godrej Industries Group (GIG), in collaboration with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Bhamla Foundation, has launched a global campaign to mark World Environment Day. Supported by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the campaign addresses critical environmental challenges, including plastic pollution and earthing — encouraging the protection of soil, plants, and the environment to restore balance and sustain life on Earth. It underscores the urgent need to raise awareness and drive actionable change to safeguard our planet’s resources.

Nadir Godrej, Chairman and Managing Director, Godrej Industries Group, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to sustainability and the importance of collective action, said, " At Godrej Industries Group, prioritizing people and the planet is embedded in our core values. Over the past decade, we’ve made significant strides toward sustainability — 64% of our energy now comes from renewable sources, and we’ve reduced our plastic packaging intensity by more than 20%. We are proud to collect and recycle 100% of the pre- and post-consumer plastic packaging we produce. Through our waste management projects, we’ve diverted over 63,000 MT of waste from landfills, freeing up land and reducing environmental impact. This campaign is a natural extension of our commitment to driving meaningful environmental change. By addressing critical challenges like plastic pollution and renewable energy, we aim to inspire collective action and create a sustainable legacy for future generations.”

To create awareness among youth and future change-makers, two short films were released as part of the campaign. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Imtiaz Ali, the films feature Bollywood actors Ajay Devgn and Sharvari Wagh. They delve into pressing issues, including the harmful impacts of plastic pollution and the vital concept of earthing.

Commenting on his association, Ajay Devgn, Bollywood actor and Global Ambassador of World Environment Day 2025, said, "The environment is not just a global concern; it's a personal responsibility that affects every individual. I chose to be part of this campaign because it emphasizes simple yet powerful actions we can take to protect our planet. Initiatives like eliminating plastic from our daily lives are essential steps toward a cleaner and greener future. By addressing pressing issues like plastic pollution, we can collectively strive to beat plastic pollution and create a sustainable world. I firmly believe that collective action can lead to meaningful change, and I’m honored to lend my voice to this vital movement.”

Asif Bhamla, Chairman of the Bhamla Foundation, called for actionable change and mentioned, "Driving actionable change requires mobilizing entire communities, and public-private partnerships like our collaboration with BMC and Godrej Industries Group are key to making a real difference. While behavior change remains a challenge in our country, simple communication paired with effective calls to action can truly land the message. For example, replacing single-use plastic bottles with sustainable alternatives and protecting soil, plants, and the broader environment are small but vital solutions that together help restore balance and sustain life on Earth. Through these films, we aim to revive sustainable lifestyles and inspire a collective shift toward environmental balance.”

Bhushan Gagrani, Municipal Commissioner of BMC, highlighted the need for community involvement and said, "This campaign exemplifies the power of collaboration between public institutions, private enterprises, and international organizations like UNEP to address urgent environmental challenges. Mumbai generates a significant portion of plastic waste annually, and managing this requires active community participation. By promoting awareness and encouraging eco-friendly habits, we can reduce plastic usage and protect our soil, plants, and environment. Together, through initiatives like this, we can build a cleaner, greener Mumbai that sets an example for cities across India and the world.”

The campaign, supported by Godrej Magic Handwash and Godrej L’Affaire, will culminate in a Cyclothon on June 4, inviting participants to reaffirm their commitment to sustainability and reinforce the global call for environmental stewardship. Furthermore, Godrej Magic Handwash will host on-ground initiatives and distribute complimentary handwash samples to encourage and facilitate the adoption of sustainable lifestyle practices.
