Godavari Biorefineries Secures Mexican Patent for Antiviral Compounds

Mumbai | October 13, 2026: Godavari Biorefineries Limited has secured a patent from the Mexican Patent Office for its invention titled “Use of Compounds for Treating Viral Infections.” The grant follows similar patents in Japan and China, extending the geographical protection of the company’s intellectual property in antiviral research.

The patent covers compounds that inhibit Vacuolar ATPase (V-ATPase), a cellular mechanism involved in the infection process of certain viruses, and their use in manufacturing medicines to treat viral infections. The research examines the role of V-ATPase in viral infection and its potential as a target for antiviral research.

Samir Somaiya, Chairman and Managing Director, Godavari Biorefineries Limited, said, “We need to think of a new India, one that is confident in its ability to innovate and compete globally. Expanding our patent protection into Mexico, after Japan and China, marks another milestone in our promise to serve a larger global community. It reflects both the international reach of our research and our commitment to building high-impact life science solutions,”

Dr Sangeeta Srivastava, Executive Director, Godavari Biorefineries Limited, said the research has enabled the company to examine how compounds that inhibit V-ATPase activity could be applied in antiviral research. The patent recognises a specific application of these compounds and marks an outcome of the company’s work in this area.

Dr Sangeeta Srivastava, Dr Sandip Gavade, Dr Maithili Athavale and Dr Prashant Kharkar are the four inventors named on the patent.

The patent adds to Godavari Biorefineries Limited’s intellectual property in the antiviral compound class and expands its life sciences portfolio.
