Diageo India Reports 93% Reduction in Scope 1 and 2 Emissions

New Delhi, October 15, 2026: Diageo India (United Spirits Limited) has released its fifth consecutive ESG Reporting Index and its first Climate Strategy & Action Report 2026, outlining its sustainability performance and climate-related initiatives for FY2025–26. The disclosures cover emissions reduction, water conservation, packaging circularity, regenerative agriculture, workforce diversity and responsible business practices.

The FY2026 ESG Reporting Index incorporates a Double Materiality Assessment, examining the company’s environmental and social impacts alongside sustainability-related risks and opportunities for its business. The Climate Strategy & Action Report sets out its climate targets, governance framework, transition pathway and risks across its operations and value chain.

Jitendra Mahajan, Chief Supply and Sustainability Officer, Diageo India, said, “Sustainability at Diageo India is about embedding responsible practices across our grain-to-glass value chain and translating our ambitions into measurable progress. In FY2025–26, we continued to advance water stewardship, climate strategy & action, and renewable energy, reduce emissions, strengthen packaging circularity and support regenerative agriculture pilots. As we move forward, our focus remains on scaling these interventions across our operations and value chain while creating long-term value for our business, our communities and the environment.”

According to the reports, Diageo India reduced its Scope 1 and Scope 2 market-based greenhouse gas emissions by 93% compared with FY2020. Renewable energy accounted for 99.1% of its total energy consumption, including renewable electricity attributes through International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-RECs). Solar and biomass-powered turbine generation supplied 61% of electricity during FY2025–26, avoiding 16,281 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO₂e).

Water management was another focus area. The company reported cumulative water replenishment capacity of 1.6 million cubic metres at water-stressed sites since FY2019–20. Water-use efficiency improved by 56% in distillation and 40% in packaging against the same baseline. More than 90% of wastewater volume was treated and reused within facilities, while three sites achieved zero liquid discharge (ZLD) certification during the year.

Packaging initiatives included a 17% reduction in PET packaging weight and a 6% reduction across the glass portfolio. The company reused 33,607 metric tonnes of returnable glass bottles and reported that 99% of its packaging was widely recyclable, with 60% of packaging material coming from recycled content.

In agriculture, regenerative practices were implemented across 804 hectares, including 426 hectares digitally measured and verified through satellite-based monitoring, reporting and verification. The programme benefited more than 1,000 farmers across 2,000 hectares, with the company reporting an approximately 19% optimisation in production costs for participating farmers.

The reports also highlighted workforce and community initiatives. Women accounted for 30% of the executive workforce and 37.5% of the Executive Committee. Through its Learning for Life programme, Diageo India trained 1,968 people during FY2025–26, including 318 persons with disabilities.

Its responsible drinking initiatives included Act Smart India, which reached more than 2.5 lakh young people during the year, and The Wrong Side of the Road programme, which reached over 7.5 lakh consumers. The company also reported that all its operations underwent an annual comprehensive compliance risk assessment.

Diageo India has set an ambition to reduce Scope 3 emissions by 26% by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions across Scopes 1, 2 and 3 by 2050. The report identifies the value chain, particularly packaging materials and agricultural raw materials, as the largest source of its emissions footprint.
