Delhi CSR funding grows twice the national average in 5 yrs; Airtel, ONGC, Maruti top spenders in 2018-19

New Delhi, 11 March 2021: The CSR funding to the national capital has increased at a speed of more than double of the national average during the period of 2014-19.

According to the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, the total funding to the National Capital grew to a massive Rs 662 Cr in the year 2018-19 from just Rs 237 Cr in 2014-15.

Thus, the CSR funding growth to Delhi is around 179 % which is more than double of that national average growth of 85 % during the same period.

 

More corporate join CSR activity

The state also witnessed a sharp rise in the number of companies undertaking CSR activities in different development sector.

Sample this: In 2014-15, the total number of companies engaged in the CSR activities was only 511. In the period of 5 years, the number increased by more than three-fold with the year 2018-19 recording the CSR funding coming from a total of 1641 companies.

However, the average CSR funding by corporates decreased as most of the new comers have been allocating low budget, thus bringing the average budget down below the level recorded in 2014-15.

Education, Health Care get major boost

While the CSR funding to the state grew significantly, the key development sectors like Education and Health Care remained the top priority for the corporates with the funding to the development sectors growing multi-fold.

For example, the CSR spent on education was just Rs 82 Cr in 2014-15. However, the sector got a major boost with a total spent of Rs 245 Cr in the year 2018-19.

Similarly, the CSR spent on Health Care increased from Rs 41 Cr in 2014-15 to 110 Cr in 2018-19.

With government of India’s focus on sanitation prompting corporates to allocate CSR budget in the sector, Delhi also witnessed a major boost with a total of Rs 55 Cr CSR fund to sanitation. The sector also grabbed the second position in terms of highest CSR funding to the development sector in the state.

CSR coverage shrinks

The CSR coverage in the national capital, however, shrank during the period. According to CSR data, the state which has a total of 11 districts had a total of 9 districts covered by CSR activities in the year 2014-15. However, the CSR coverage shrank to just 6 districts in the year 2018-19.

Bharti Airtel, ONGC, Maruti Suzuki among top spenders

During the period, the list of top CSR spenders in the state changed completely with Bharti Airtel, ONGC and Maruti Suzuki taking the lead in CSR funding in 2018-19. In the year 2014-15, the list of top spenders included MMTC, Samsung and Infosys.

As per the MCA data, Bharti Airtel spent close to Rs 32 Cr followed by ONGC which spent Rs 18 Cr. Maruti Suzuki was at the third position with funding of Rs 16 Cr.
