Mumbai, May 11, 2026: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), operated by Mumbai International Airport Limited, has been awarded the Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWL) Platinum – Class I Rating by the Confederation of Indian Industry.

The recognition places CSMIA among Indian airports handling over 50 million passengers annually that have achieved this certification. The assessment confirmed that the airport diverts more than 99% of its waste away from landfills through integrated waste management systems.

According to the assessment conducted in FY2025–26, the airport has implemented structured processes for segregation, recycling, and recovery across key waste streams, including plastic waste, municipal solid waste (wet and dry), and other recyclables. Major waste sources include food waste, paper, plastic, and operational waste generated within airport premises.

CSMIA’s approach is based on the 5R principles—Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle, and Recover—supported by infrastructure for segregation at source, monitoring systems, and partnerships with authorised recycling facilities. A dedicated environment and sustainability team oversees implementation and continuous improvement across operations.

The ZWL recognition adds to the airport’s broader sustainability initiatives. CSMIA has also achieved Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) Level 5, reflecting its progress in carbon management. Over the past year, the airport has expanded its sustainability efforts through the transition to 100% renewable energy, improvements in energy efficiency of over 40%, electrification of ground support equipment, and strengthening of ESG governance practices.

The latest certification highlights the airport’s ongoing efforts to integrate sustainability into its operational framework, particularly in waste management and resource efficiency.
