Centre to Crack Down on E-Waste Violators with Audits and Penalties

New Delhi, August 17, 2024: In a significant move to tackle the growing menace of electronic waste, the Indian government is set to intensify its crackdown on companies flouting e-waste management regulations. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) is gearing up to conduct comprehensive audits of various companies over the next six weeks. Those found in violation of the E-waste (Management) Rules, 2024, will face hefty penalties, the proceeds of which will be utilized for environmental protection initiatives.

The E-waste (Management) Rules, introduced earlier this year, have empowered the CPCB to monitor and penalize entities that fail to adhere to the prescribed e-waste disposal and recycling standards. The upcoming audits aim to assess the compliance levels of manufacturers, importers, and refurbishers of electronic goods, ensuring that they are responsibly handling the electronic waste generated from their products.

The government has adopted a stringent approach to address the issue of e-waste, which has become a major environmental concern due to its hazardous components. Improper disposal of electronic waste can lead to soil and water contamination, as well as air pollution. To incentivize responsible e-waste management, the CPCB will establish a system of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) certificates, which will be traded among producers, refurbishers, and recyclers.
