Mumbai, June 30, 2025: AT Capital Foundation Limited (ATCF), the social impact arm of AT Capital Group, has announced a five-year partnership with international non-profit The Ocean Cleanup to tackle plastic pollution in Mumbai’s Thane Creek. As part of the collaboration, ATCF has pledged €1.5 million to support the cleanup and restoration of one of Asia’s largest creeks, designated as a Key Biodiversity Area.

The project aims to intercept approximately 385 tonnes of plastic waste per year. It will deploy The Ocean Cleanup’s Interceptor™ system, including a walkable log-boom and Interceptor Guard booms to retain waste, supported by a Direct-to-Shore conveyor system for extraction. The waste collected will be managed in collaboration with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Thane Creek is also home to Maharashtra’s second-largest marine sanctuary and supports a rich ecosystem of mangroves and waterbird species. The project seeks to not only reduce plastic pollution but also restore this vital habitat and support the long-term ecological balance of the region.

“We are thrilled to be part of this long-term conservation project to revitalise Thane Creek. This sponsorship forms part of AT Capital’s ongoing charitable commitment to supporting environmental, health, and education programmes worldwide. This project is a crucial step towards safeguarding Mumbai's natural beauty and biodiversity. Together with The Ocean Cleanup, founded by Boyan Slat in 2013, we aim to make a measurable difference in reducing plastic pollution at its source,” said Arvind Tiku, Founder, AT Capital Group.

The initiative is part of The Ocean Cleanup’s 30 Cities Program, which aims to eliminate up to one-third of plastic flowing from rivers into oceans by the end of the decade. In Mumbai, waterway mapping has already been completed, and preparation for initial deployments is underway.

“AT Capital’s support is pivotal in supporting our work in Mumbai,” said Nisha Bakker, Director of Partnerships at The Ocean Cleanup. “Their commitment and shared values enable us to start the implementation of solutions to make concrete progress toward a cleaner, healthier future for our oceans, rivers, biodiversity and communities.”

The project will also include community engagement programs focused on environmental education, livelihood restoration, and capacity-building, particularly supporting the indigenous Koli fishing community. AT Capital's real estate arm, Experion Developers, will manage the programme implementation on the ground.
