NTPC exceeds its CSR obligation by 50 % in FY 2020-21; Spends Rs 419 Cr

New Delhi, 15 March 2022: NTPC Limited, India’s largest energy conglomerate, has spent around Rs. 419 Crore towards various CSR activities in the financial year 2020-21, exceeding by 50 % its CSR obligation for the financial year.

The average net profit of the company for the last three financial years as per section 135 (5) of companies Act, 2013) was Rs.13,928.41 Cr. Thus, according to the company officials, the prescribed CSR budget for the company was only Rs. 278.57 Cr for the financial year 2020-21. However, the company spent close to Rs 419 Cr, which is around Rs 140 Cr more than the prescribed amount.

NTPC CSR: Focus areas

According to the annual report of the company, the focus areas of the company’s CSR & sustainability activities were health, sanitation, safe drinking water, and education. Moreover, the company also worked on the projects related to capacity building, women empowerment, social infrastructure livelihood creation and support through innovative agriculture & livestock development, support to Physically Challenged Person (PCPs).

NTPC’s CSR efforts were focused in the immediate vicinity of its stations to ensure that majority CSR funds were spent on activities addressing the needs of the local community. However, considering inclusive growth and environment sustainability, the company took up some activities in different parts of the country to supplement governmental efforts.

During the year, it worked in more than 450 villages and more than 400 schools under its various CSR initiatives at different locations.

Composition of CSR Committee

The CSR committee at NTPC is led by Mr Vinod Kumar who is the Chairman of the Committee. Other key members include P K Deb, D K Patel, Bhim Singh, and Ramesh Babu V. During the financial year 2020-21, the company held as many as five meetings of its Committee for CSR & Sustainability.
