csr

In the world of jazz, Etienne Charles stands out as a musician who seamlessly marries artistic brilliance with social responsibility. Renowned for his exceptional trumpet skills and evocative storytelling, Charles has ventured into a groundbreaking fusion of music and advocacy, addressing the critical issue of climate change. His latest climate-focused performances are more than concerts; they are immersive experiences that challenge audiences to confront urgent environmental realities. Drawing inspiration from his upbringing in Trinidad and his deep connections to the Afro-diaspora, Charles employs a multidisciplinary approach that combines jazz, dance, filmand spoken word, transforming his art into a compelling call to action for a global audience.

Growing Up with Climate Awareness

“I’ve been exposed to the effects of climate change from early in my life growing up in a small island state, Trinidad,” Charles shared. Living on an island surrounded by the Atlantic and Caribbean seas, he witnessed firsthand the vulnerabilities faced by coastal and marginalized communities. This personal connection drives his work and gives his performances an authenticity that resonates deeply with audiences.

Music as a Call to Action

“Music is a great way to call to action,” Charles explained. Throughout history, music has been a catalyst for social movements, and Charles’ performances are no exception. His climate-focused pieces aim to energize listeners, sparking dialogue and encouraging action against one of the most pressing issues of our time. “The goal is to energize people about the solutions, and understanding that the time is ticking.”

Amplifying Marginalized Voices

For Charles, climate change is not just an environmental issue but an economic one that disproportionately affects marginalized communities. His performances highlight the stories of those most at risk—from Maldivian fishermen to Afro-descendant communities—giving them a platform to share their experiences. “Hearing the voice of an actual Maldivian fisherman, as opposed to me, immerses the audience in a way that I can’t alone,” he said.

The Role of Multidisciplinary Art

Incorporating danceand spoken word alongside music, Charles creates an immersive experience that transcends traditional concert formats. These elements enrich his storytelling, drawing audiences into the realities of the climate crisis. “It’s way different hearing a story told through multiple senses,” he noted.

Optimism Through the Blues

Despite the gravity of his subject matter, Charles’ work exudes hope. “Blues is eternal optimism in the face of adversity,” he said, referencing Wynton Marsalis’ philosophy. His performances strike a balance between confronting harsh realities and inspiring faith in solutions. “Vision without action is a dream. Action without vision can be a nightmare.”

A Global Conversation

Charles’ music is a bridge, connecting vulnerable regions around the world, from the Indian Ocean to the Caribbean. “Through this project, I’ve found similar problems in the Bayouislands in the Indian Ocean, Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. Part of the scope of the project is to connect these places, knowing that we can find solutions by working together.”

Indian Jazz Influences

The young jazz player has been influenced by soca music—a blend of Afro and Indo-Trinidadian rhythms. Soca music, or the "soul of calypso", is a genre of music that originated in Trinidad and Tobago in the 1970s. It is considered an offshoot of calypso, with influences from West African and East Indian rhythms. Created by Ras Shorty in an effort to revive traditional calypso, soca has developed into a range of new styles.

Charles sees parallels between Indian and Caribbean musical traditions. This intersection enriches his work and broadens its appeal. For Indian audiences, who are increasingly drawn to jazz and fusion, Charles hopes his performances resonate both musically and thematically. “I’d like for them to enjoy the music and understand how it works with the message.”

A Call for Unity

When asked about the takeaway message of his climate-focused performances, Charles’ response was clear: “We have to come together.” With collaborations with scientists, policymakers, and other artists on the horizon, Charles is expanding his impact, ensuring that his music not only entertains but also mobilizes global audiences toward collective action.

Etienne Charles stands as a testament to the power of art as a force for change. By blending the rhythms of his Trinidadian roots with the universal language of jazz, he’s crafting a narrative that resonates across borders, reminding us that the fight against climate change is a shared journey.
