“I’ve been exposed to the effects of climate change from early in my life growing up in a small island state, Trinidad,” Charles shared. Living on an island surrounded by the Atlantic and Caribbean seas, he witnessed firsthand the vulnerabilities faced by coastal and marginalized communities. This personal connection drives his work and gives his performances an authenticity that resonates deeply with audiences.
Music as a Call to Action
“Music is a great way to call to action,” Charles explained. Throughout history, music has been a catalyst for social movements, and Charles’ performances are no exception. His climate-focused pieces aim to energize listeners, sparking dialogue and encouraging action against one of the most pressing issues of our time. “The goal is to energize people about the solutions, and understanding that the time is ticking.”

Charles’ music is a bridge, connecting vulnerable regions around the world, from the Indian Ocean to the Caribbean. “Through this project, I’ve found similar problems in the Bayouislands in the Indian Ocean, Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. Part of the scope of the project is to connect these places, knowing that we can find solutions by working together.”
Indian Jazz Influences
The young jazz player has been influenced by soca music—a blend of Afro and Indo-Trinidadian rhythms. Soca music, or the "soul of calypso", is a genre of music that originated in Trinidad and Tobago in the 1970s. It is considered an offshoot of calypso, with influences from West African and East Indian rhythms. Created by Ras Shorty in an effort to revive traditional calypso, soca has developed into a range of new styles.
Charles sees parallels between Indian and Caribbean musical traditions.This intersection enriches his work and broadens its appeal. For Indian audiences, who are increasingly drawn to jazz and fusion, Charles hopes his performances resonate both musically and thematically. “I’d like for them to enjoy the music and understand how it works with the message.”
