Mr. Rajen Bhagyoday, Founder - Greendot Biopak Pvt. Ltd.

As India's paper and packaging sector enters a high-growth phase across segments, with sustainability and circularity at its core, automation driving efficiency, and policies accelerating recycling, TheCSRUniverse interviews Mr. Rajen Bhagyoday, Founder - Greendot Biopak Pvt. Ltd., on upskilling workforces and pioneering eco-friendly solutions for long-term competitiveness.

Here are the highlights of the conversation:

Q. How is Greendot expanding its global footprint in India and internationally to drive mass adoption of eco-friendly polymers?

A. Greendot Biopak is rapidly expanding across India, the UK, and Europe, where demand for PFAS-free and PE-free sustainable packaging is rising sharply, particularly in the HoReCa sector. We are collaborating with major food-service brands, restaurant chains, QSRs, and packaging converters to help them transition from PE-coated, PFAS-coated, and conventional plastic packaging to certified compostable and fully sustainable alternatives.

Our portfolio includes:
• Compostable resins and films
• PFAS-free paper coatings
• Sustainable cupstock and food wraps
• High-barrier coated paper that replaces multi-layer laminations

Our strategy goes beyond geographic expansion — it focuses on deepening penetration in regions accelerating their shift toward plastic-free and PFAS-free systems due to stringent EU and UK regulations.

Q. What are the new R&D breakthroughs you are focusing on to further reduce carbon emissions?

A. Our R&D team is developing next-generation materials designed to cut carbon emissions and replace high-pollution plastics at scale. Key advancements include:

• Replacing PE-based shrink, stretch, and cling films: We are creating compostable films with strength, elongation, and durability comparable to traditional PE films, lowering fossil-fuel dependency and life-cycle emissions.

• Developing PE/PFAS-free alternatives to alcohol, beer, and cold-drink cups: Our aqueous barrier coatings make paper cups fully plastic-free, PFAS-free, heat-sealable, and both recyclable and repulpable replacing conventional PE or chemically treated cups.

• Building 100% bio-based PFAS-free OGR wrap: We are scaling a high-performance oil- and grease-resistant coating that eliminates PFAS from burger wraps and food wraps, addressing one of the most harmful chemicals used in global packaging.

• Replacing plastic/aluminium laminates with high-barrier coated paper: One of our most significant breakthroughs, this solution allows the replacement of plastic laminations, aluminium foil, and metallized films with paper-only packaging while maintaining essential barriers such as moisture, grease, heat resistance, aroma retention, and seal strength.

Additional areas of innovation include bio-resins with lower processing temperatures, lignin nanoparticles and bio-fillers that reduce polymer usage, and PFAS-free heat-resistant coatings for grill and baking applications. Our R&D mission is clear: eliminate plastics without compromising performance.

Q. There are reports that bioplastics lack strength & water resistance. What feedback do you receive from users regarding performance?

A. User feedback from brands has been overwhelmingly positive. Advanced compostable blends especially PBAT + PLA combinations and our proprietary barrier coatings consistently deliver performance on par with traditional plastics.

Customers specifically highlight:
• Superior flexibility and strength in bags and films
• Industrial-grade shrink and stretch capability
• Excellent water resistance and OGR performance in coated papers
• Strong sealing and durability in cup stock and food-service applications

Brands value that they can achieve plastic-like performance without the environmental cost associated with traditional plastics.

Q. How do you position yourself in the global debate on plastic pollution and sustainable alternatives?

A. Greendot Biopak positions itself as a science-driven, certification-led manufacturer offering genuine compostable and PFAS-free materials. All our products meet global and national standards including EN 13432, ISO 17088, and CPCB certification, ensuring complete biodegradation and zero microplastic generation.

For us, sustainability is not a marketing angle it is a responsibility anchored in data, transparency, and long-term environmental impact.

Q. Many corn-starch–based bioplastics require industrial composting. How do you address concerns about home or natural composting?

A. We maintain full scientific transparency. While most certified compostable polymers are engineered for industrial composting conditions, we clarify that:

• Thin films and bags do break down in home compost over time
• Our materials do not generate microplastics at any stage
• All formulations are non-toxic and safe for soil and natural ecosystems

We also guide customers on correct disposal practices and support the development of municipal composting infrastructure to ensure proper end-of-life management.

Q. BIS warns that no plastic is proven 100% biodegradable in every environment. How does Greendot ensure compliance and avoid misleading claims?

A. Greendot adheres to rigorous compliance protocols to ensure clarity, accuracy, and regulatory alignment in all communications.

We use only approved terminology such as:
• Compostable as per EN 13432 / ISO 17088
• CPCB-certified compostable
• PFAS-free / PE-free
• No oxo-degradable additives

We supply complete documentation including certificates, test reports, and compliant artwork to all clients. We intentionally avoid vague, unscientific claims like “100% biodegradable in nature.”

Every marketing and communication piece undergoes compliance checks to meet BIS, CPCB, and PWM Rules. Our approach is grounded in honesty, scientific rigor, and full regulatory transparency.
