New Delhi, December 16, 2025: Signify, the world leader in lighting, has announced the street LEDification of 100 villages along the Indo–Nepal border, in collaboration with Tarq Foundation. The initiative is being implemented under the guidance of Shri Rajnath Singh Ji, Hon’ble Defence Minister of India, and aims to improve safety, mobility and livelihood opportunities in border communities.
Stretching across nearly 1,700 km, the Indo–Nepal border is home to communities that often face infrastructural and safety challenges, particularly after dusk due to limited street lighting. Through the installation of energy-efficient LED streetlights, the project seeks to address these challenges by enabling safer movement, supporting evening economic activity and strengthening community networks.
The initiative is part of Signify’s Har Gaon Roshan CSR programme and aligns with the company’s #BrighterLivesBetterWorld vision. Villages were identified through on-ground assessments that considered community feedback, footfall patterns and specific safety concerns, ensuring the intervention responds to local needs.
Commenting on the initiative, Mr. Nikhil Gupta, Head of Marketing, Strategy, Government Affairs & CSR – Signify, Greater India, said, “At Signify, we believe in bringing the best of innovations to the communities across India, through our Har Gaon Roshan CSR initiative. Through this initiative, we aim to bring long-term safety, sustainability, and confidence to border communities. This partnership reflects our commitment to using light to positively impact lives in India, fostering sustainable growth and community empowerment.”
Manoviraj Singh, Founding Partner, Tarq Foundation, highlighted the community-centric approach of the project, stating, “Real development starts by listening to the people it is meant to serve. Border communities have their own unique rhythms: evening markets, long walks home from school, and the daily movement of women whose sense of safety is directly shaped by how well-lit their surroundings are. This initiative responds to these lived realities. In these villages, light is not symbolic; it is practical, protective, and deeply empowering.”
The LED streetlighting of 100 villages marks a significant milestone in improving rural safety and well-being in sensitive border areas. Through this collaboration, Signify and Tarq Foundation aim to contribute to building more resilient, connected and empowered border communities, reinforcing a long-term commitment to inclusive and sustainable development
