Mumbai, December 02, 2025: Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital & Medical Research Institute has been awarded the Certificate of Distinction for its Healthcare Sustainability Program by Joint Commission International (JCI) in partnership with the International Hospital Federation’s Geneva Sustainability Centre. With this recognition, the Mumbai facility becomes the first hospital in India—and only the fifth worldwide—to receive this global benchmark for sustainability in healthcare.
Healthcare ranks among the top contributors to carbon emissions globally, and the certification comes at a time when hospitals are increasingly focused on reducing operational risks and strengthening resilience against climate-related disruptions. The achievement also aligns with emerging requirements around climate-risk reporting under frameworks such as the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) and the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB).
Highlighting the significance of the recognition, Dr. Santosh Shetty, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, said, “The certification reflects our core belief that sustainability unlocks both better clinical outcomes and stronger operating performance. Our 2030 Sustainability Roadmap focuses on energy efficiency, water stewardship, low-emission materials, and climate-resilient infrastructure. These investments are designed to reduce long-term cost pressures, improve patient safety, and strengthen business continuity in a city facing increasing climate volatility.”
The JCI–GSC programme recognises hospitals that demonstrate strong environmental risk governance at the board level and integrate emissions, waste, water efficiency and supply-chain sustainability into enterprise-risk frameworks—standards that are increasingly shaping responsible healthcare operations.
India’s rapidly growing healthcare sector faces heightened exposure to climate-linked risks, with disruptions projected to cost South Asia up to USD 36 billion annually by 2050. Against this backdrop, Kokilaben Hospital’s alignment with global ESG frameworks is a notable step toward climate-resilient care delivery. Its sustainability certification reflects an advanced level of governance beyond existing national norms, integrating key environmental metrics into core risk management.
Kokilaben Hospital stated that it will continue strengthening its sustainability roadmap to support operational resilience and long-term value creation in the face of rising climate challenges.
