Mumbai, April 19, 2024: Omni-channel jewellery brand CaratLane has partnered with Maithree, an advocate for the empowerment of children and persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities (PwIDDs), to introduce the Assisted Employment Scheme.

This initiative aims at ensuring sustainable employment opportunities and skill enhancement for PwIDDs, ensuring their integration and success in the workforce.

By introducing the Assisted Employment Scheme, Maithree is championing the cause of PwIDDs, providing them with not just jobs but also opportunities for growth and fulfilment, fostering a society where everyone can contribute meaningfully and lead dignified lives regardless of ability. While, CaratLane, through this initiative, is extending its impact beyond jewellery to make a significant difference in the lives of PwIDDs.

Speaking on the initiative, Avnish Anand, Co-Founder and CEO at CaratLane, says, “At CaratLane, we believe in the power of business to effect social change. By partnering with Maithree, we shall leverage our resources for the greater good, ensuring that economic growth includes everyone, especially those who are often overlooked. This isn’t just about financial support; it’s about integrating these capable young adults into the fabric of our everyday lives and industry.”

“Through this initiative, we aim to break down barriers and foster an environment where diversity and inclusion are at the forefront of business practice. Our commitment extends beyond this programme, influencing our internal practices and hopefully inspiring other corporations to take similar steps towards inclusivity and social responsibility," he said.

The Assisted Employment Scheme, drawing inspiration from the government's MGNREGA policy, is tailored to address the specific requirements of Persons with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (PwIDDs), ensuring not only financial stability but also avenues for personal growth. At its core, the scheme offers a comprehensive framework comprising several key components.

Firstly, it provides a structured Two-Year Vocational Training programme, wherein participants undergo specialized training geared towards equipping them with the necessary skills and competencies for suitable employment opportunities aligned with their abilities and interests. Moreover, participants benefit from the Assisted Employment Scheme Grant, which entails a monthly stipend gradually decreasing by 20% annually over a span of five years, aimed at facilitating a smooth transition towards financial self-reliance.

Additionally, the scheme incorporates Productivity-Based Incentives, wherein individuals are rewarded based on their performance and productivity levels, thereby fostering a culture of continuous improvement and skill enhancement among participants.

Furthermore, the scheme ensures Guaranteed Minimum Earnings, entitling beneficiaries to a foundational income of at least Rs 2500 per month for the initial five years, thus providing a safety net and promoting financial security. Collectively, these components underscore the scheme's holistic approach towards empowering PwIDDs by offering them meaningful employment opportunities coupled with essential support mechanisms for their sustained socio-economic well-being and personal development.

The first cohort of 100 young adults who have completed a rigorous two-year vocational training programme at Maithree and joined the Assissted Employment Scheme were felicitated at an event organised in Chennai on April 16. Bhaskar Bhat, Director, Tata Sons, and Mithun Sacheti, Founder, CaratLane, graced the occasion.
