csr

Bengaluru, November 09, 2023: Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Executive Chairperson, Biocon Ltd. and Biocon Biologics Ltd. has been recognized as the second most generous woman philanthropist in the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List. She has also been placed among the top 15 philanthropists of India. Her philanthropic contributions of Rs. 96 crore span across Science, Research & Education, Social & Environment, and Art & Culture.

This is the tenth year of the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List. It features individuals who have donated Rs. 5 crore or more during the period April 2022 – March 2023. The distinguished EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2023 that compiles top 119 Philanthropists (25 new entrants) highlights the efforts of 7 women philanthropists. The philanthropists have cumulatively donated Rs. 8,445 Crores which has increased by 59% compared FY2022.

Commenting on her philanthropic journey, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw said, “Philanthropy is about setting an example and I think many of us, first-generation entrepreneurs who have built very successful businesses have come together to take a common approach to philanthropy. We all believe that every generation has to create new wealth and the wealth that you have created, a large part of it must go back into making the society better. It is this belief that has led me to focus my philanthropic efforts on Science, Research & Education; Social & Environment; and Art & Culture, with a zeal to change the world for the better."

Actively contributing towards the welfare of several causes across Art & Culture, Science, Research & Education, and Social & Environment, she believes these are factors that can Advance Humanity. Her contributions support scientific research, with a special focus on the biosciences, encourages the conservation and advancement of art and culture, and also backs institutions and initiatives actively working in areas related to the environment, sustainability, health, nutrition, diversity and inclusion.

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw is the first Indian woman to join The Giving Pledge. She was the second Indian to join after Azim Premji. The Giving Pledge is a global initiative founded by Warren Buffett and Bill Gates in 2015 that encourages billionaires to give the majority of their wealth to philanthropic causes.
