Godavari Biorefineries Secures US Patent for Anti-Cancer Compound
Mumbai, October 21, 2026: Godavari Biorefineries Limited (BSE: 544279 | NSE: GODAVARIB) has secured a United States patent for its invention titled “5-Hydroxy-1,4-Naphthalenedione for use in the treatment of cancer”, expanding its intellectual property portfolio in life sciences. The grant follows patent approvals for the compound in India, China and Japan.
The patented compound belongs to a class of molecules being investigated for their ability to inhibit cancer cells and cancer stem cells. According to the company, the research has potential applications across multiple cancer types, including breast and prostate cancer.
The US patent extends the geographical scope of the company’s intellectual property protection and supports its ongoing research into compounds with potential applications in cancer treatment. However, a patent grant does not in itself establish the compound’s clinical effectiveness or confirm its approval for medical use.
Commenting on the development, Samir Somaiya, Chairman and Managing Director, Godavari Biorefineries Ltd., said, “Our approach to innovation is guided by a larger purpose: advancing human health and wellbeing. The Sanskrit mantra ‘सर्वे सन्तु निरामयाः’, meaning ‘Health for All’, reflects this commitment. The grant of this US patent marks an important milestone in our life sciences research, strengthening our intellectual property and advancing our work on compounds with potential applications in cancer treatment. It reinforces our belief that scientific progress should strive to make better health and wellbeing accessible to all, contributing to a healthier future for everyone,”
Dr Sangeeta Srivastava, Executive Director, Godavari Biorefineries Ltd, said, “The development of novel molecules for potential applications in cancer treatment requires sustained scientific research and a deeper understanding of the mechanisms involved in cancer cell growth. This patent represents an important step in our research journey, particularly in exploring compounds that target cancer and cancer stem cells. Our focus remains on advancing scientific understanding and building on our research capabilities to explore potential approaches to complex human health challenges.”
Dr Srivastava is one of the four inventors named on the patent, alongside Dr Sandip Gavade, Dr Prashant Kharkar and Dr Maithili Athavale. The patent adds to Godavari Biorefineries’ life sciences intellectual property and research portfolio focused on cancer-related applications.
