Mumbai, Oct 15, 2024: In a significant step towards improving the quality of life for North Mumbai’s slum dwellers, Union Minister for Commerce and Industry and MP from North Mumbai Piyush Goyal handed over the allocation letters of new home to more than 1,000 families living in slum area.
These 1,000 houses are in addition to 1,200 already handed over under the government’s redevelopment initiative. This comes as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to ensure that no family in India is left without a dwelling unit with basic infrastructure of sanitation, water supply and electricity in a clean environment.
The event took place on October 6. Goyal also announced the initiative to transform North Mumbai into a model of slum redevelopment, ensuring the slum dwellers receive their new homes right at the sites of their former slums.
Speaking at the event in Dahisar, Goyal reaffirmed the government’s commitment to making sure all residents of North Mumbai will soon have homes of their own. He emphasized how this initiative is not just about housing but about building a healthier, safer, and more dignified living environment for slum residents.
"We are ensuring that every family moves into a clean, hygienic, and fully equipped home with essential amenities like washrooms, kitchens, and access to clean water, elevating their standard of living significantly," he stated.
This initiative is a part of the Slum Rehabilitation Authority's (SRA) broader efforts to transform the living conditions of those in Mumbai’s informal settlements. Under this program, each beneficiary will be allotted a 300 sq. ft. home, designed with modern infrastructure and hygiene facilities. Shri Goyal underscored the importance of providing not just houses but sustainable living conditions for slum residents, in line with the government’s vision of transforming urban living across India.
In addition to housing, Goyal highlighted other significant infrastructure projects completed over the past four months in North Mumbai. Key projects include the opening of the Akurli Bridge, the redevelopment of Bhagwati Hospital, and road work improvements from Dahisar to Bhayandar. Furthermore, occupational certificates were issued without fees to all eligible applicants, ensuring that approvals and necessary permissions were processed smoothly.
Goyal closed the event by encouraging the local community to come together in transforming North Mumbai into “Uttam Mumbai” (Excellent Mumbai), a vision that embraces not only physical infrastructure but the betterment of lives through improved housing and community support.
