Bhubaneswar, Nov 9, 2024: The Odisha State Transport Authority (STA) and Odisha State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC) are spearheading safety programs that focus on infrastructure, traffic management, and skill-building.
Project SuVahak, a flagship initiative, emphasizes driver training and skill development, having trained over 24,450 refresher drivers and 6,575 new drivers to date. Inclusivity is a core value, as the program also reaches marginalized groups, such as women and former Maoist rebels.
Odisha, with its extensive road network and heavy traffic density, faces significant safety concerns. The state reports a staggering 32 road crashes each day, with a fatality rate of 47%, significantly higher than the national average of 36%. High speeds, distracted driving, inadequate infrastructure, and insufficient driver training contribute to this statistic.
Recognizing these risks, Odisha’s transport authorities, with Palladium as a strategic partner, have launched an array of safety-focused initiatives that target the root causes of these issues.
Beyond driver training, the state has made significant investments in training law enforcement, transport officials, and road engineers. In collaboration with Palladium, Odisha has upskilled more than 567 police officers, 80 transport officials, and 150 engineers in advanced crash investigation and infrastructure safety techniques. These efforts focus on proactive measures to address accident-prone locations.
Odisha’s approach to road safety extends beyond official programs and reaches deeply into communities through Project Rakshak, a first-responder initiative that has trained over 12,865 volunteers in life-saving skills. Empowering community members to play a role in road safety is pivotal to Odisha’s strategy, ensuring a faster response to accidents and enhancing road safety awareness. The program recently expanded with Junior Rakshak, which trains 63,000 National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets in first-aid and emergency response, inspiring a culture of safety among young people.
The drive for safety in Odisha’s public transport system extends to strengthening the workforce within its public transport agencies. In partnership with Palladium, the OSRTC has organized over 464 training sessions focused on bus scheduling, route management, digital tools, and safety protocols. Additionally, district managers have undergone specialized training to enhance their oversight capabilities, ensuring reliable and safe transport services across the state.
Collaboration with industry stakeholders, including Ashok Leyland, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH), and the Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT), brings cutting-edge technology and practices to Odisha’s training programs. These partnerships ensure that Odisha remains at the forefront of public transport safety advancements, aligning with global best practices.
“A robust public transportation system is essential for sustainable development and social mobility. Odisha’s dedication to safety and skills development is a model for the entire nation,” said Amit Patjoshi, CEO of Palladium India. “Our partnership supports Odisha in building a transport network that not only safeguards its citizens but also propels economic growth,” he added.
