New Delhi, August 25, 2023: Under India's G20 Presidency, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), in collaboration with the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) and Gau Samagra, organized a Jan Bhagidari/Community engagement event. The initiative aimed to honor 'Aapda Mitras' through the 'Gau Samagra Raksha Bandhan Abhiyan,' recognizing their role as first responders during emergencies.Shri Kamal Kishore, Member Secretary NDMA shared that ’Aapda Mitra Scheme’ aligns with the broader goal of enhancing disaster resilience and preparedness across the nation. "Aapda Mitras, through their selfless service, are the true guardians of disaster management. Their dedication and bravery deserve our recognition and gratitude,” he further added.
Sharing the key highlights of the ‘Aapda Mitra Scheme’ implemented by NDMA, Shri Rajendra Singh, Member, NDMA stated “The National Disaster Management Authority has taken significant steps in promoting community engagement and disaster resilience through the implementation of the ‘Aapda Mitra’ scheme. Under this initiative, more than 6,000 community volunteers, with 200 volunteers per district in 30 flood-prone districts were trained on a pilot basis across 25 states/UTs. The training focuses on disaster response, particularly in flood scenarios, enabling volunteers to effectively address immediate community needs following a disaster.”
“The scheme is now being scaled up across India, aiming to train 100,000 volunteers in 350 highly vulnerable districts prone to various disasters such as floods, cyclones, landslides, and earthquakes. This initiative fosters a culture of volunteerism in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) throughout the country”, he further stated.
Representatives from Gau Samagra conducted a thread-tying ceremony for Delhi state Aapda Mitras, using a 'Rakhi' made of cow dung. This initiative highlighted sustainable practices and empowered women self-help groups. The collaboration emphasizes community engagement and resilience-building within disaster management strategies. The 'Gau Samagra Raksha Bandhan Abhiyan' acknowledges the unique role of Aapda Mitras in safeguarding communities during crises.
Volunteers shared their experiences, encouraging more individuals to join the cause of disaster management. This initiative reflects the collective spirit of community-driven disaster management. NDMA aims to inspire a nationwide movement towards a more prepared and resilient India through this event.
The Chief Guest, Ms. Anusuiya Uikey, Honourable Governor of Manipur, praised the initiative for resonating with the G20 Jan Bhagidari Event, showcasing India's commitment to disaster resilience. Collaborative efforts are crucial as countries face increasing risk exposures. Other dignitaries present at the event included Lt. General Syed Ata Hasnain, Member NDMA; Ms. Mrinalini Shrivastava, IPS, and Director G20; Basant, a nationalist and thinker; Ms. Monika Arora from GauSamagra, and Ms. Mukta from DDMA.
