New Delhi, Aug 20, 2022: Around 17,000 employees of Mankind Pharma have pledged to donate Organs during a live awareness program organised by the pharma company in collaboration with NOTTO (National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization).

The Live session was conducted by Dr Sanjiv Jasuja, a Nephrologist from Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi and Dr Archana Kumari from NOTTO.

Organ Donation means donating a donor's organs like heart, liver, kidneys, intestines, lungs, and pancreas, after the donor dies, for the purpose of transplanting them into another person who is in need of an organ.

According to a survey In India every year about 500,000 people die because of non-availability of organs, 200,000 people die due to liver disease, and 50,000 people die because of heart disease. Moreover, 150,000 people await a kidney transplant but only 5,000 among them actually get it on time.

The organ donor can play a big role in saving others’ life. The organ of the donor can be transplanted to the patient who needs it urgently.

Speaking at the event, Dr Archana Kumari from NOTTO talked about the myths and facts regarding organ donation. She also stressed that it should become a discussion point among friends and family as it will change the mindset of people, at least putting a thought of impression among people to think about organ donation.

Dr Sanjiv Jasuja spoke about the importance of organ donation and said that organs can be only taken from people who are brain dead and whose heart is working and people who are dying at home they can easily go for a cornea donation.

Speaking about the company’s initiative, Rajeev Juneja, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, Mankind Pharma, said, “With this initiative, Mankind aims to spread awareness and educate people that such kind of healthy discussions are needed which will help people to make better decision and should come forward to join hands in the cause.”

Dr Archana Kumari from NOTTO (National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization) said, “As we all know a person can save up to eight lives by pledging their organs. We want to make people aware and help them start realising how they can touch and save the lives of not just the patients but their entire families. I sincerely hope that people start volunteering to donate their organs after death. It can enrich thousands of lives.”

World Organ Donation Day is observed every year on August 13 across the globe. The purpose of observing this day is to spread awareness about the importance of organ donation and to encourage people to do the same.
