Mumbai, January 12, 2024: Mahindra Susten, a leading renewable Independent Power Producer ("IPP") with expertise in engineering, procurement, and construction ("EPC"), announced its 'Water Positive Verification' certification for the entire operating portfolio during the FY23 assessment year. This recognition was granted by TUV India (TÜV NORD GROUP).

The certification process involved an audit of project locations spread across five states – Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh. TUV India's evaluation yielded a score of 15 (Positive) on the Water Footprint Index, which reflects Mahindra Susten's remarkable achievement in recharging water resources 15 times over of what was consumed across its +1.5 GWp renewable energy portfolio.

The 'Water Positive Verification' certificate is not merely an acknowledgment; it signifies Mahindra Susten's dedication to adopting sustainable practices in a sector traditionally known for its water-intensive operations. The solar industry, vital for meeting global renewable energy needs, often grapples with water-related challenges due to the continuous cleaning required for solar modules.

Speaking about the recognition, Deepak Thakur, MD & CEO, Mahindra Susten, said, “Mahindra Group aims to be Planet Positive by 2040. Mahindra Susten is making steady progress in steering the Group towards this shared goal. While the solar sector is critical for meeting the world's renewable energy needs, it has traditionally been water-intensive, which goes against sustainability norms. This is primarily attributed to the constant need for cleaning solar modules to minimize soiling loss and mitigate module performance-related impacts. We have taken a major step towards establishing sustainable operations by having a 100% water-positive portfolio.”

One of Mahindra Susten's primary initiatives has been reducing water consumption without compromising solar power plant efficiency. This innovative approach comprises a three-step strategy:

- Reduction of Water Consumption: Mahindra Susten employs cutting-edge technology, including high-quality water spray pumps, water piping systems, and innovative module cleaning brushes, optimizing water usage across its projects.

- Elimination of Water for Module Cleaning: The company invested in advanced technology, such as dry-cleaning robots, to eliminate water for module cleaning. Presently, 63% of the portfolio utilizes these robots, resulting in the annual conservation of almost 67 million litres of water – equivalent to fulfilling the basic water needs of 50,000 people throughout the year.

- Water Conservation: Mahindra Susten implements sustainable practices like groundwater recharge systems with artificial recharge ponds and rainwater harvesting recharge pits, contributing to the overall conservation of water resources.

Initiating solar projects in water-stressed areas like Rajasthan presented unique challenges, prompting Mahindra Susten to pioneer solutions. The 'Water Positive Verification' certificate sets a benchmark for sustainable practices in the renewable energy sector. Mahindra Susten's journey is a testament to how responsible business practices can address environmental challenges while meeting the global demand for clean energy.
