New Delhi, October 2, 2023: Plastic pollution stands as the most significant environmental challenge facing humanity today. To tackle this issue head-on, the Mysuru-based Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL), a division of the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), has achieved a significant breakthrough by introducing eco-friendly biodegradable water bottles.
The product launch occurred at the National Conference on Millets for Military Ration and Specific Nutritional Requirements, hosted by DFRL at the SDM Institute of Management Development (SDM-IMD). These PLA bottles, developed in collaboration with Konkan Speciality Polyproducts Private Limited, can carry 250 ml of portable water and are manufactured using injection blow molding techniques, known for their quality and consistency.
Made from poly lactic acid-based (PLA) material, these bottles are set to revolutionize the hydration sector due to their biodegradability while also contributing to reducing carbon footprints. Notably, not only the bottle is compostable, but its cap and label are also compostable, meeting ISO 17088-2021 and IS 17899 T: 2022 Standards for compostability.
These bottles are sustainable, reliable, and considered safe for food and beverage applications. In terms of strength, they are on par with traditional PET bottles. What sets them apart is their origin, derived entirely from 100 percent bio-based and renewable sources. As an eco-friendly alternative to conventional plastic water bottles, DFRL's innovation offers a solution to the global plastic waste management system while reducing the environmental impact of disposable packaging.
With time and increased usage, this innovation is expected to prove itself as a sustainable solution to mitigate the harmful effects of plastic waste.
