Chennai engineer Pravin Kumar wins James Dyson Award 2023 for Mouseware innovation

New Delhi, September 14, 2023. Chennai-based engineer Pravin Kumar has emerged as the national winner of the prestigious James Dyson Award 2023 in India for his innovation Mouseware, a technology designed to assist individuals with upper limb disabilities. Mouseware allows users to control smart devices using head movements, simplifying digital interactions.The James Dyson Award, a global competition spanning 28 countries, challenges students to devise engineering solutions that address real-world problems using clever and straightforward engineering principles. The 2023 edition in India witnessed a surge in creative concepts, with young engineers showcasing innovative solutions to tackle practical challenges. As the national winner, Pravin will receive approximately INR 5 Lakhs (£5,000) in prize money and will represent India in the international round, where the final winners will be selected by Sir James Dyson.Pravin intends to repurpose his patented technology for various applications requiring gesture-based interaction, with a focus on NGOs, special schools, hospitals, and rehabilitation centers aiding individuals with disabilities.

The motivation to create Mouseware was born out of a desire to break down barriers for individuals with disabilities and empower them to become digitally independent. Winning the James Dyson Award is a tremendous honour, and it will significantly propel our mission forward. It not only validates our hard work but also provides us with a global platform to share Mouseware's potential. With this recognition, we aspire to expand our reach and make Mouseware accessible to countless individuals worldwide.”

Administered by the James Dyson Foundation, established by Sir James Dyson, the James Dyson Award aims to instill a passion for design engineering among young people and serves as a source of celebration, encouragement, and inspiration for the next generation of design engineers.

 Mouseware, a project developed within Pravin's tech startup Dextroware Devices based in the IIT-Madras Research Park, is advancing toward commercialization. Pravin initiated the company after graduation with the goal of utilizing technology for the betterment of society. The James Dyson Award recognizes inventions that address genuine problems and create meaningful impact, aligning with Dextroware Devices' mission to create assistive technologies that enhance digital accessibility for individuals with disabilities.

This win serves as a beacon of inspiration for aspiring engineers and a testament to the transformative power of innovation when aligned with a strong sense of purpose”, said Sagnik Dey, Institute Chair Professor, Centre for Atmospheric Sciences, IIT Delhi.

In addition to Pravin's Mouseware, sustainability took center stage in this year's James Dyson Award in India. Vikrant Pawra from Maharashtra secured the first runner-up position with his Hydrogen-Ethanol Fuel Powered Bike, designed to reduce vehicle-related pollution. Harsh P from IIT Guwahati claimed the second runner-up position for his Zero Waste Toothbrush, a solution to the global issue of plastic pollution caused by disposable plastic toothbrushes and toothpaste tubes.The international top 20 shortlist for the James Dyson Award will be unveiled on October 18, 2022, with the international winners announced on November 15, 2022.
