Bengaluru, December 04, 2023: Amazon.in has broadened its commitment to computer science education through the expansion of its Amazon Future Engineer (AFE) program, which will impact 13,000 students in grades six to eight across 30 districts in Karnataka. This initiative introduces advanced coding and artificial intelligence (AI) modules in 100 Karnataka Residential Educational Institutions Society (KREIS) Schools.

In collaboration with Learning Links Foundation (LLF), Amazon seeks to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of computer science. The advanced module enables students to delve into complex computer applications, incorporating advanced programming concepts such as control conditions, variables, and functions. Emphasizing project-based learning, the program also introduces the basics of AI, exploring its relevance, future possibilities, and impact on students' lives and the world around them.

The 20-hour module is designed to complement existing courses in coding, logical sequencing, learning loops, and block programming offered to KREIS schools under the Amazon Future Engineer Program. It accommodates the varying exposure levels of students to computer science and coding. Class six students will be introduced to the fundamentals of block programming, while seventh and eighth graders will delve into advanced programming and the basics of AI.

Learning Links Foundation (LLF) plays a crucial role in implementing this initiative, conducting introductory coding sessions and grade-appropriate coding boot camps in person. This approach is particularly beneficial for schools situated in remote areas. LLF collaborates with educators to provide professional development support and resources, fostering effective computer science learning in the long run.

Moreover, Amazon employees actively contribute to the initiative by conducting Class Chat Sessions. These sessions guide students on diverse career opportunities within the tech industry and provide insights on pathways to achieve their goals.

This expansion follows Amazon India's September 2023 announcement of an extended partnership with the National Education Society for Tribal Students (NESTS) under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India. The Amazon Future Engineer program was introduced in 54 Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) across multiple states, broadening its scope to include Advanced Block Programming and Artificial Intelligence for students in grades six to nine.

Since its introduction in 2021, the AFE program has partnered with various education-focused non-profit organizations, including Leadership for Equity and Learning Links Foundation. It operates as a childhood-to-career program, supporting students from primary schooling through secondary education into their careers. The program not only offers scholarships and internships to aspiring female students in the tech industry but also collaborates with organizations sharing a common mission.

“The Amazon Future Engineer program's integration of advanced coding and AI modules aligns seamlessly with our vision to empower our students with the proficiency required to navigate the increasingly tech-centric world," said Shri Manivannan P, Principal Secretary to the Government, Social Welfare Department, Government of Karnataka.

"Amazon is expanding its Future Engineer program in partnership with KREIS to include advanced coding and AI modules in 100 schools, further solidifying our commitment to provide equitable access to quality computer science education. We are excited to nurture the talents of students, regardless of their socioeconomic backgrounds, and prepare them for the future. This project-based learning module will empower students with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in a tech-driven world. Recognizing education's transformative power, Amazon is committed to democratizing access to high-quality computer science education," said David Zapolsky, Senior Vice President, Global Public Policy and General Counsel, Amazon.

Amazon Future Engineer has made a substantial impact, supporting over 1.5 million students in exploring and learning computer science. Additionally, it has trained over 8,000 teachers across the country. The recent expansion reflects Amazon's ongoing commitment to making computer science education accessible and meaningful for students across diverse backgrounds.
