Sembcorp Establishes STEM Labs in Rural Schools, Reaching 5,500 Students Across Seven States

New Delhi, August 11, 2025: Sembcorp, a leading energy company, has launched a rural education initiative to improve learning outcomes and expand opportunities for students in underserved areas. Based on a need assessment in communities near its project locations, the programme focuses on enhancing access to quality education through science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learning.

In collaboration with MASTER Interactive Sciences, Sembcorp has set up fully equipped STEM labs in 10 government schools across Gujarat, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Telangana, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh. The initiative targets students from Classes 5 to 10, aiming to encourage scientific curiosity and strengthen learning foundations through experiential education.

Each lab contains over 80 interactive models to simplify science and mathematics concepts, making them more engaging and easier to understand. “The STEM lab at our school has been a big difference. It has created a lively learning environment where students can try out experiments and enjoy learning science,” said a teacher from one of the participating schools. “It’s making a real impact beyond the classroom too.”

The project builds on Sembcorp’s earlier education-focused efforts, including the solar electrification of six schools in Rajasthan, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh earlier this year. That initiative provided reliable electricity for classrooms, ensuring uninterrupted academic activities for 2,500 students.

“Now that we have a STEM lab, we feel more confident about learning science. It helps us understand tough topics more easily and makes learning fun,” said a student from one of the schools.

The STEM initiative has already reached more than 3,000 students, combining practical learning tools with traditional teaching methods to help learners build skills and confidence for future careers in STEM fields. Together with the solar electrification programme, Sembcorp’s education projects have impacted over 5,500 students in rural areas.

The company said these efforts reflect its commitment to bridging the urban-rural education gap and preparing young learners for a knowledge-driven future.
